This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” full color glossy new photo reproduction of a 1960 WHITE-FREIGHTLINER TRACTOR and FRUEHAUF FREIGHT VAN operated by TRANSCON LINES.


As an added bonus, I will include a photocopy of the route map for Transcon’s All-Year Southern Route from San Francisco/Oakland and Los Angeles across to Atlanta, with spokes up to Wichita and down to Dallas-Ft. Worth.

DESCRIPTION: My original photo came from a Transcon publication, showing a 1960 WHITE-FREIGHTLINER COE with Sleeper pulling a lightweight FRUEHAUF Aluminum Van. The tractor is identified as Transcon Lines - Oklahoma City, OK. The tractor carriers electric sanders in front of the single pusher dead axle. This color photo has a white border only on the top.


HISTORY OF TRANSCON LINES, INC.: Starting with 15 tractors and 22 trailers in 1946, founder Scribner Birlenbach, had a plan to take a local operation and turn it into a major transcontinental carrier. By 1962 the company was operating over 1100 units on 14,000 route miles and was already in the “Top 20” Motor Carriers. Their philosophy was to use extremely light weight equipment, high average payloads, and to put high monthly mileage on its road tractors, along with expansion through acquisition of companies in their geographic growth path. The fleet was completely standardized using Kenworth and White Freightliner road tractors built to identical specs, all powered by Cummins NH220 diesels and lightweight components. Trailers were 40’ tandem axle drop-frame design. By 1969 Transcon was operating 3350 pieces of equipment from 42 terminals. Over the next 12 years Transcon continued to grow and prosper with an employee force of 3800+ operating 5700 pieces of equipment out of 117 terminals in 38 states. The beginning of the end started in 1987 when losses began. In 1990 Transcon was the 12th largest LTL carrier in the nation, and was sold to a Miami investment group. Another Miami investment group gained control of P.I.E. In April 1990 the I.C.C. granted temporary operating authority for P.I.E. to control Transcon Lines. The same day, all Transcon equipment was sold and 3800 Transcon employees were out of work. The rest of the Transon operation was absorbed into the P.I.E. System, which filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 1990. Another great carrier from the “Golden Years of Trucking” gone from the highways, but not from our memories.


Some of the acquisitions along the way were great old names too: Riss, Kramer, United-Buckinham-Norwalk, Akers, Central, Eastern Freightways, Ohio Fast Freight, and M&M … among others.


HISTORY OF WHITE-FREIGHTLINER: Consolidated Truck Lines, Inc. was started in 1929 by founder Leland James and a group of men who combined four trucking operations, becoming Consolidated Freightways, Inc. (CF) in 1939. To meet the special needs of CF, about 20 experimental trucks were built between 1937 and 1939 by the CF mechanics in the Portland shops. These were often called “Monkey Ward” Freightliners because to some they looked like they were made from mail order parts. Production of the first trucks by Freightways Manufacturing began in August 1940 in their Salt Lake City shops. In 1942 they took on the name of the Freightliner Corporation. Truck production stopped in 1944 during WWII, and the Freightliner shops were moved to Portland, with a new plant opening in 1947. Freightliner signed an exclusive sales agreement with White Motors in 1951 that continued to the end of 1977, when Freightliner again became an independent company, and then part of the Daimler-Benz family. As WHITE-FREIGHTLINER, White sold and serviced the trucks, while Freightliner concentrated on building the units. All WHITE-FREIGHTLINERS were custom built to the buyers specifications at this time, no ‘standard’ models being built.
