Developed from the Twin Wasp, the R-2800Double Wasp was probably the most significant engine built by P&W duringthe Second World War. The Double Wasp had two rows of nine cylinders with adisplacement of 2804 cu in (46L). Production started in 1940, rated at 1850 hp.(This was the first P&W engine to achieve 100 hp per cylinder.) Cylinderswere manufactured from steel alloy forgings with aluminium cooling muffs shrunkon to the barrel. The engine was developed to the C Series, rated at 2500 hpat 2800 rpm. This was boosted to 2800 hp with water/methanol injection, calledAnti-Detonation Injection (ADI) in the US. This was the engine that powereddozens of aircraft, including the F4U Corsair, P-47 Thunderbolt,Martin B-26 Marauder, Grumman F6F Hellcat andseveral post-war aircraft.

This sale is for a Pratt & WhitneyR2800 piston aircraft engine, -31 model, B series, (WWII era), built in 1945, near the end of thewar, & under license by FORD Motor Co.As can be seen by the photos, it is not complete - missing carburetor,starter, other external drives, some sheet metal, ductwork and other stuff. Also includes a service manual.

“AS THE STORY GOES,” this was built right at the end of the war, and the government contract was cancelled. It was in a crate from the factory, andbelonged to a Ford engineer. Upon hispassing, the estate donated it to the Aviation Hall of Fame of New Jersey at TeterboroAirport in NJ. It ended up out of thecrate, exposed, on the ground behind the museum for a few years. Some parts were sold off it, and then Ibought it in NOV of 2007 to keep it from the scrap yard. (I am a P&W retiree). It has been in an enclosed trailer, or undera tarp, and currently is on an open trailer in a tobacco shed. My intentions were, as a retirement project,to either give it an external cosmetic restoration for display, selling theinternal parts, or try to get it running on a trailer for demo fire-ups at airshows or swap meets. I had a group of 5people lined up to work with me on it, but they have fallen by the wayside, andnow that I am retired, it does not look like that will happen. No, I cannot verify the “AS THE STORY GOES”story, but it looks like it may havebeen test run in a cell, and then crated up for shipment. I’m sure with the weather exposure it saw andscarfed parts, it is seized, so you’re purchasing it as a core for parts orrebuild. NO CERTIFICATION of any parts or warrantee of usability orcompleteness…

Thelast few pictures were taken at pick-up in Nov of 2007; the rest are very recentphotos from the current in barn storage.The trailer it is tied down on IS NOT included in thissale. Sold AS IS - WHERE IS;currently located in the Manchester, CT area.Delivery MAY be possible, within 200 miles of Manchester, in December, atseparate cost. Alternate delivery atadditional separate cost if near highway route to Knoxville, TN from CT MAYalso be possible in late December. You willneed to ARRANGE FOR LOGISTICS as needed to load/unload/transport thisengine, Weight is approx 2,300 lbs. This is VERY important.
