U.S. Civil War Dated 1862 Ames Model 1860 Union Naval Cutlass Sword
Price: US $325.00

This sale is for one sword.

This is a Civil Warera Ames Model 1860 Naval Cutlass sword that was made in Chicopee, Massachusetts, in 1862.This sword was produced for the enlisted crew to be used during battle.

Traditionally thissword would have a AmesManufacturingCompany in Chicopee, Massachusettsstamp near the bottom of the blade where it connects to the guard.Unfortunately the stamp has worn off due to heavy use and polishing. Back inthe day when the sword was made the originalAmes stamp was very, very light and weak to begin with. It’s not surprisingthat the stamp has worn off. In my opinion, all indications show that thissword was made by theAmesManufacturingCompany in Chicopee, Massachusettsin 1862. I’m not an expert so I’ll let you be the judge of that.

The wooden grip has hadthe wire intentionally removed. The grip also has a small 2 inch by quarterinch section missing from the underside area. Please take a look at thepictures and see for yourself.

The brass hilt cup has a nice dark patina. The cup has the normal bumps and bruisesfound on acutlass that has seen service.

There is a brass rivet missing on the hilt cup near where it connects to the the hilt guard. Right next to the missing brass rivet is a second rivet that is still attached but has comeundonefrom the hilt cup. The swordoriginallyhad 10 rivets and now have 9remaining. Please lookat the pictures to get a better idea of what I’m talking about.

The brass hilt cup has the number 33 stamped on it.

The sword also has small initials “DR” stamped on thepommel cap.Daniel Reynolds, the sword inspector, was responsible for inspecting a substantial amount of the model M1860 cutlasses produced.Pleasetake a look at the pictures to see.

The quillon/guard isstamped with the serial number 15M / 99. This serial number includes the letter M. The right side of the M has beenseverelyworn down. I\'m guessing that the serial number would be 15,099.

The obverse ricasso reads 1862. Part of the 1862 is wearing off but you can see it says 1862. The 6 and the 2 are halfway rubbed off. The other numbers look OK. See the pictures.

The blade is about26 inches long, and the handle is an additional 6 inches for a total of 31 3/4inches in length. The blade is gray and shows some rust and corrosion. The blade has no nicks and is smooth. This sword is 154 years old.

I am not anexpert on swords. Please email me if you have any questions. I’ll do my best toanswer your questions. I’ve tried to describe the sword the best I can from myresearch.
