VERY FINE RARE OLD NORTHWEST COAST TLINGIT INDIAN SPOON BASKET 19c NR
Price: US $660.00

We have decided to offer a few special Haida argillite pieces and this great rare Tlingit basket , all from our collection this week and best of all with .

A very rare early Northwest Coast Tlingit hand woven feast spoon storage basket dating from the 1800\'s. This very tight and evenly woven basket is the result of twined spruce root and the striking false imbricated colored designs from maidenhair fern and dyed bear grasses. The stunning deigns featuring diamonds and meandering \"S\" designs are executed in red, cream and brown. This type of basket was known as spoon storage basket and was used to hold the wooden and goat horn feast spoons used in pot latching ceremonies. These bags were made for Ethnographic use and typically stored flat in the cedar boxes, not many of these baskets have survived and are quite rare in collections. This fine bag measures 9 3/4\"H x 7 1/2\" wide, it is in good condition for its great age, a split is noted at the bottom, a small ink type stain at the top edge and a couple of broken stitches in the open work pattern ( please see photos). Top edge is intact and the colors are spectacular. The basket displays very well and could be placed in a glass shadow box or even framed for wall display. This museum qualitybasketwill make an excellent addition to anyone\'s collection.
