JOANIES CHINESE SCHOLAR ART ESTATE sale

JOANIES VOTED #1 ESTATE sales TEN YEARS AND RUNNING!

Hello, thank you for having a look at our sales. This week we are very excited to be offering the what I believe to be one of our most important sale sales to date, and our Last large sale of the season. This sale offers a wide variety of fine and important Chinese works of art including bronzes, jades, paintings and other rarely found scholarly objects.

The sale features items from two important estate collections, along with some last porcelain examples from the Michael Vermeer collection. We have featured items from both these estate collections in the past and now the estate has asked us to sell the remainder of the collections. They include items from the estate of Mr. H.H Pao of Toronto who owned a high-end shop in the famous Four Seasons hotel in Toronto for several years throughout the 1980s to 1990s period. Mr. Pao was a dear friend whom was considered one of North America’s top experts and scholars in many categories of antique Chinese art. The sale also includes jades and other early Chinese bronze and archaic items from the estate of A Abraham. Mr. Abraham was a highly respected Asian Arts dealer and collector in the 1950-70’s period. He frequently travelled to China, Hong Kong, New York, and London on buying trips at the time. Abraham owned the Imperial Jade shop in the famous King Edward hotel in Toronto until his retirement in the year 1976, 40 years ago. When the shop closed many of the pieces went to Sotheby’s in New York for sale. Abraham kept some of his most favorite examples that we are now offering for sale. Most of the pieces have been in storage since the shop closed in 1976 and have not seen the light of day until now.

We ask that you only offer on the items if you are serious about purchasing them. If you have any questions in regards to the items or payment please do not hesitate to email me.

Up for sale is a very rare pair of Chinese aubergine glazed figural handled hu form lidded jars from the estate of the late Chinese monochrome ceramics expert Michael Vermeer. As many of you know I have sold the major majority of this important estate collection over the past few months. I was planning to keep a few of my most favorite pieces including these jars but have now decided to offer the remaining pieces to my great customers.

The jars are fine and very unique examples that I believe are rarely found. I believe the jars would date from the 18th to 19th century period. It is interesting to note that the interiors of the jars and lids are white glazed instead of completely aubergine glazed. This extra kilning step was much more time consuming to produce and is usually only found on earlier finer quality examples. The jars have a rich aubergine glaze throughout. The jars have very unique figural side handles. Upon very close inspection I did find that one of the jars has a light hairline to the rim that extends around 3 inches. The one closest figural handle has had the ear re-glued as well. The jars are otherwise in substantially fine condition with no other damage or repairs. The jars display beautifully measuring 8 1/4 inches tall, by 6 inches wide, and 6 1/2 inches wide including the side handles. In upwards of 30 years searching for and saleing such treasures I have personally never had or sold a single example like this, leading me to believe such jars are rarely found. I was able to find a similar example missing its lid that had recently sold as Christies as seen.
