A stunning & rare, late Victorian \'Mizpah\' brooch in solid gold (these are typically found in silver), c1900.
No marks, but this has been professionally tested by the jeweller I purchased it from and is guaranteed 9ct gold.
Shaped as two hearts, set side by side, with the MIZPAH motif surrounded by forget me not\'s to one side, and wording \'The Lord Watch Between Me and Thee When We Are Absent One From Another\' to the other heart.
This references the Old Testament of the Bible (Genesis 31:49); jewellery bearing the MIZPAH motif was very popular with the sentimental Victorians; worn by sweethearts/family members who had to be parted for a time.
Original tube hinge, pin and \'c\' catch.
Measurements: 31mm by 17mm.
Weight: 1.86gms.
In good antique condition; some minor rubbing to wording commensurate with age & use.
