Vintage 1950s Hand Pieced Quilt Top Mint Condition 78\" x 94\" Unusual Pattern
Price: US $92.00
This is a large (78\" x 94\") mid-century quilt top, which includes fabrics from both the 1940s and 50s. I was unable to find a name for this unusual pattern, which is very graphic with many colorful prints. It is quite a bit brighter than quilts from the 30s.
The quilter must have run out of the original yellow fabric, because in 5 or 6 blocks, she substituted a brighter yellow fabric which I think you can see in photo #5. In my opinion, this just adds to the charm of the quilt. There are no thin, thick or inappropriate fabrics used in this top -- all the pieces appear to be cotton dress fabrics from the period.
The top is entirely hand pieced with small stitches (photo #7), and the maker did a good job matching points. Each square measures 1 1/2\", the seam allowances are good, and there is no fraying, even on the edges of the top. I did notice a few places where there were tiny tucks in the stitching, but it wasn\'t something I would bother restitching, and I\'m pretty picky about stuff like that. The condition of the quilt top is amazing for its age -- very clean with no odors, tears, holes or busted seams. The only problems I could find are two small (eraser head sized) spots shown in the 6th photo.
This is just a quilt top -- there is no batting, backing or quilting.
