Vintage 3 1/2\" D R Barton Oval Back Socket Slick -BEST OF THE BEST
Price: US $152.50
3 1/2\" oval back socket slick by D R Barton. David R Barton was one of the most influential figures in the history of American edge tool manufacturers. Probably more than any other did he put American edge tools on the map. In fact, an edge tool maker in Sheffield, Eng was so impressed with Barton\'s tools that he developed a chisel similar in construction that he called the \"Rochester\" pattern. I\'ve owned many slicks, bevel back Douglass\', oval back Greenlee\'s, etc, but I don\'t think I could\'ve described any of them as elegant. However, that term describes the Barton slick perfectly. To me, a lot of attention was put into making a well balanced tool that wasn\'t simply a massive slab of steel with a thick stick attached to it. This tool is all original. Beautiful applewood handle that fits the hand nicely. The blade itself, as large as it is, is not overly thick. Even at 3 1/2\" it seems lighter and better balanced than some of its contemporaries. Nicely canted with a subtle longitudinal sweep to facilitate the planing action of the tool. Like Sag Harbor slicks, Barton places a small screw in the socket to help keep the handle in place. Unlike most other chisels whose handles benefit from being struck with a mallet thereby tightening them in the socket, slicks can often lose their handles or even become loose during use. To me, this slick represents the best of the best.
This tool has minor pitting and light patina. Previous owner has carved their initials in the handle. Small chip of metal missing from the edge of the socket … only cosmetic. Logo worn, but easily recognizable. Blade 11 1/2\" to neck, 15 1/2\" of steel, 27 3/8\" oal. Bottom lamination covers more than 75% of the bottom of the blade; a quality found in all the better slicks and framers. Weighs 4 lbs. Word of caution: this slick is razor sharp. Alas, I have to let this one go. I\'ve truly enjoyed it. An excellent user and/or collectible. See photos.
