Up for offer is one used \"Abercrombie & Fitch Co.\" Wood Fishing Tackle Box. This box measures 20\" long, 7-3/4\" wide, and 8-3/8\" high. Inside there is a removable tray 18-7/8\" long, 6-9/16\" wide, and 1-5/8\" high. This tray has 11 compartments,each about 1-1/2\" wide for lures, hooks, floats, and sinkers. The compartment below thetray is about 4\" high, for reels and other larger items. I do not recognize the wood by type, but the grain shows clearly in the photos. The bottom of the inside has staining mostly at one end as shown in the photos. The hardware appears to be all brass. The front two latches arelabeled \"U.S.A., EXCELSIOR, STAMFORD, CONN.\". I Googled this name and location to see if it would help date the box. Excelsior Hardware Company started about 1898 and lasted into the 1980s. It started making and was named after a popular trunk lock used at the time whose generic name was Excelsior. No help in dating this hardware was found. As shown in the photos, there is a missing piece of hardware on the front which probably was a lock of some sort. Also missing is the handle from the top.
It is a solid box with some minor marks and stains on the outside. The outside has an obvious newer coat of varnish. The top has a foam gasket. It fits nicely when closed with the spacing of the hinges, so it would appear there was always a gasket between the top and body of the box. I\'m not sure if a foam gasket would be the correct material, it would seem like a cork material may have been replaced with foam when the refinishing was done, just speculation. On the underside of the cover there is a brass nameplate with \"A&F Co (logo), Abercrombie & Fitch Co., NEW YORK\" stamped or cast into it (see photo). This would be a great box to display a collection of antique lures.
