I have retired from active playing due to age. I am selling my personal horns and this has been one of my favorites. It is a Bach Strad 72 Vindobona or MLV model. The serial number is 33640, with each valve stamped with this serial number. This indicates that it should be a late 1965 production, the first year in Elkhart after moving from Mt. Vernon, NY. It is raw brass and nickle silver slide tubes and upper valve balusters. I personally think this contrast is attractive and have always liked that aspect of the older Bach trumpets. It has a pretty even patina. The slides are free and smooth, the valves are smooth, fast and tight. The valves were replated at Osmun Music and are tight with even wear. Their process involves honing the cylinders back to round and then plating up the pistons with copper, and nickel over that and then hand lapped into each individual cylinder.
The horn is straight with no dings or dents that I can detect.
The sound is what you would expect from the 72 bell, dark with nice warm overtones. If I understand correctly, the Vindobona bore increases from .444 to .453, then to .459 into the valves block and slides. With the 72 bell, the bore of the bell tail should be .462. All of this makes it easy to play and adds to the dark timbre. Allegedly, Bach designed this trumpet to resemble the sound of the rotary trumpets.
Included is the original case, in good condition, with latches and their springs still functional.
