\"J. Lizars Challenge\"

1/2 Plate

Camera.

This fabulous \"J. Lizars Challenge\" camera is in \"as found\" condition and has not been restored or repaired by us.

The J. Lizars company was founded in 1830 by the optician John Lizars (1810-1879) in Glasgow, Scotland. Its stereo viewers and Challenge cameras were particularly innovative, Matthew Ballantine took over the running of the company in 1882, expansion into photographic items probably date from this time and manufacture of cameras probably started around 1896. In 1913 it had branch offices in Edinburgh, Paisley, Greenock, Aberdeen, Liverpool and Belfast. The distinctive Lizars cameras of their own design ceased by the end of WW1.

There are no splits or holes to the black leather bellows, that I can find, however, there are the usual scuffs, marks and fading along the creases.
The glass plate measures 4 3/4 inches by 6 1/2 inches, I believe this is 1/2 plate size and has no cracks or chips.

The mahogany body is free from any major splits or cracks, however, it does have the scuffs and scratches you would expect from an item of this age.

All of the brass work appears to be present without any damage, the camera extends smoothly and all of the other slides, hinges work well and the camera extends and folds down as it should. I have tried to show this in the photographs.

The leather handle to the top of the camera is sturdy and strongly attached.

The camera is fitted with a \"Lizars Challenge Time & Inst. Shutter\", The iris of the unmarked brass lens works, however, it does appear to be dusty internally.

The applied ivorine makers plate on the back of the camera reads \"J. Lizars Challenge, Glasgow, London, Edinburgh, Belfast, Aberdeen\". There is also an applied plaque to the shutter, this has \"Lizars Challenge Time & Inst Shutter\"

This camera requires a little TLC to bring it back to its\' full glory and would grace any collection.
