This is a fabulous item that looks like it is straight from thetable in an episode of Downton Abbey or from America’s own Golden Age whenrailroad tycoons and oil barons covered the streets in front of their mansionson New York’s Fifth Avenue with a thick bed of straw so the sounds of carriagespassing their homes wouldn’t disturb them.

What is particularly remarkable is that it still has its glassinsert as so many of those have been broken by a clumsy movement and to thebest of my knowledge, those simply aren’t manufactured anymore. (When looking on the website of a popularsilver manufacturer when asked how to obtain a glass replacement, the advicewas to try and “pick one up at an estate sale.”) Yet, you could visit scores and scores ofestate sales before finding one!
