As we approach our beloved Hallowe\'en holiday, we are HAUNTINGly happy topresent a PURRRfectly wonderful Cat On A Fence Jack o\' Lantern that was madefrom pressed paper pulp or what many refer to as paper or papier mache. He isan American-made decoration that was produced from the 1930s to the 1950s andwe’ve named him Calvin. This is an authentic, original piece of Hallowe\'en history and he is called “CatOn a Fence” because he is peering over fence posts just waiting to scare Trickor Treaters on All Hallows\' Eve. This iconic and enchanting design was made intwo color variants: an orange kitty with black hand-painted whiskers and fenceposts and this one, which is Ziz’s favorite, black with hand-painted orangewhiskers and air-brushed fence posts. One similar to Calvin can be seen on page 28 of the phenomenal new thirdedition of “Vintage Halloween Collectibles”, written by esteemed expert,collector and author Mark B. Ledenbach.We are so deeply honored that Mark invited us to include some of the piecesfrom our collection in this incredible new edition! This is an earlier example of this lantern and Ziz knows this in part becauseof its earlier type of paper insert creating Cal’s oh-so-SCARY features. Insteadof being the glassine type of insert, the earlier versions were more opaque andprone to darkening as they age. Notice that Cal’s pupils are a shade of orangeinstead of being the lighter cream color of the glassine inserts.Cal’s paint is all original without any touch-ups whatsoever. Pulp lanternssuch as this one were often lit using real wax candles to illuminate theirfamily homes onSPOOKY Hallowe\'en nights however, Calvin shows no evidence ofbeing used in this way. He has NO wax and we see NO burn marks in his interior! Yay!This FRIGHTfully fabulous lantern measures 7 ½” tall (9 ½” to the top of hiswire bale handle) x 6” wide x 5 ¼” deep. He does have some expected wear to his paint which only adds to his charm. Hehas NO cracks and NO holes to his pulp with the exception of the two holes atthe top that were placed there to accommodate his wire bale handle. One hole hasenlarged somewhat over the years. We think this an exceptionally appealing piece with his CREEPY-cool countenanceand his excellent condition -- especially given his advanced age.
