Welcome Fellow Vintage and Antique Hallowe'en and Paper Ephemera Enthusiasts! Many of you know us as longtime collectors and sellers of vintage and antique Hallowe'en, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter memorabilia, antique dolls, old toys, and lovely old china and glassware. Ziz is gearing up for our favorite holiday season so she thought she would start it off with a bang! For your all-year-long Hallowe’en-loving pleasure, we are HAUNTINGly happy to present one of Ziz’s all-time Hallowe'en favorites... the American-made classic pulp cat-on-a-fence Jack o' Lantern! This design was made from the late1930s through the 1950s. It features a super-SCARY kitty cat peering over pulp fence posts waiting tofrighten Trick Or Treaters on All Hallows' Eve. While actually made from pressed paper pulp, many refer to this material as paper or papier mache. This kitty-cat is in colors of black and orange and his original paper insert is in colors of red, green, and ivory white. The cat-on-a-fence lantern was also made in orange but Ziz must admit the black version has always been her FRIGHTfully favorite. When we think of Hallowe'en, this iconic design immediately comes to mind for many of us. So interesting to note: this kitty retains his original price on the underside that indicates he was originally sold for a whopping 29 cents at one of those great old American 5 & 10cent stores that we miss and remember so well. For Ziz,a coupleof those stores wereBotwin'sand Richard's 5 & 10 in Morris Plains, New Jersey! :)One just like this kitty can be seen on page 37 of Mark B. Ledenbach’s outstanding book “Vintage Halloween Collectibles; An Identification & Price Guide (Second Edition)”. Mark points out that most of the paper inserts inside of these lanterns are reproductions but happily,we are 100%certain that this one is original and authentic....a rare find indeed.This piece measures 7 ½” tall x 6 ¼” wide x 4 ½” deep. The insert and the underside of this lantern both have the name of a former child owner. The lantern itself appears to be unused, meaning there isNO melted wax in the interior. Believe it or not, back in the day, lanterns such as this kitty were often illuminated by using real wax candles. YIKES! The underside of this lantern is intact with no holesand shows the classic ring feature that is proof of its authenticity. Kitty’s exact condition is as follows: He has no wire bale handle but he does have two holes at the top to accommodate one. His paint is in excellent condition and still retains most of its shine. There is loss of finish to the nose area and to the tips of the ears. These areas look great but we are unsure if it is merely a loss of surface finish only, or if it has been lovingly touched-up. The original paper insert has two tiny pinholes and hasNO major tears or loss. There is some slight paint wear to the bottom rim. If you are looking for a super-nice example of this iconic piece of Hallowe'en history, we think Kitty – with his MAGICally magnificent and oh so SPOOKYexpression and his very nice condition – just might be the PURRRRRRRfect acquisition for you! When cometh Hallowe'en,
With black cats loudly meowing,
And witches to be seen;
For ‘tis the night when bats careen,
And hoots the hooting owl,
While in the heavy shadows
The gray ghosts slyly prowl.Happy Hallowe'en 2013!
