Popular Science (PopSci) is an American monthly magazine carrying popular science content, that is, articles for the general reader on science and technology subjects. Popular Science has won over 58 awards, including the American Society of Magazine Editors awards for its journalistic excellence in both 2003 (for General Excellence) and 2004 (for Best Magazine Section). With roots beginning in 1872, PopSci has been translated into over 30 languages and goes out to at least 45 countries.

Popular Science Monthly was founded in May 1872 by Edward L. Youmans to disseminate scientific knowledge to the educated layman. Youmans had previously worked as an editor for the weekly Appleton\'s Journal and persuaded them to publish his new journal. Early issues were mostly reprints of English periodicals. The journal became an outlet for writings and ideas of Charles Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley, Louis Pasteur, Henry Ward Beecher, Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, Thomas Edison, John Dewey and James McKeen Cattell. William Jay Youmans, Edward\'s brother, helped found Popular Science Monthly in 1872 and was an editor as well. He became editor-in-chief on Edward\'s death in 1887. The publisher, D. Appleton & Company, was forced for economic reasons to sell the journal in 1900.

James McKeen Cattell became the editor in 1900 and the publisher in 1901. Cattell had a background in academics and continued publishing articles for educated readers. By 1915 the readership was declining and publishing a science journal was a financial challenge. In a September 1915 editorial, Cattell related these difficulties to his readers and announced that the \"Popular Science Monthly\" name had been \"transferred\" to a group that wanted the name for a general audience magazine, a publication which fit the name better. The existing journal would continue the academic tradition as Scientific Monthly. Existing subscribers would remain subscribed under the new name. Scientific Monthly was published until 1958 when it was absorbed into Science.

The Modern Publishing Company acquired the Popular Science Monthly name. This company had purchased Electrician and Mechanic magazine in 1914 and over the next two years merged several magazines together into a science magazine for a general audience. The magazine had a series of name changes: Modern Electrics and Mechanics, Popular Electricity and Modern Mechanics, Modern Mechanics and finally World\'s Advance, before the publishers purchased the name Popular Science Monthly. The October 1915 issue was titled Popular Science Monthly and World\'s Advance.

The change in Popular Science Monthly was dramatic. The old version was a scholarly journal that had eight to ten articles in a 100 page issue. There would be ten to twenty photographs or illustrations. The new version had hundreds of short, easy to read articles with hundreds of illustrations.

Now the Son of the man who originally built it from the magazine plans in his wood shop in Milwaukie, Oregon works with me and he helped his Dad build it in 1958. Shipping and Payment information

Pay through PayPal using:

1. We accept PayPal as our only form of payment. We do not accept any other form of payment. Sorry, but no exceptions.

2. All items will be shipped within 1 business day to your PayPal address. We will only ship to your PayPal verified address, (we do not review or ship to your address, we only look at your PayPal address). While this may seem like a \"customer unfriendly\" policy, this is a fraud prevention technique and is for the consumer\'s protection, as well as ours. It is also per PayPal policy. If you do not hear from us, please assume your package went out as promised. We will only contact you if there is a problem. Due to the large numbers of orders we receive, we cannot send a personal confirmation to each customer.

3. All items are shipped by USPS first class mail. In an effort to keep our costs down, that are passed along as low prices to you, all of our disks are packaged and shipped in economic sleeves and mailers. No hard case is included. All of our disks are labeled with a clean text only label. The disks are made this way for speed and cost, which translates into lower cost for you. The disk labels do not contain fancy artwork. We focus our efforts on the quality of the material on the disk. We do not believe in charging you an extra 3 or 4 dollars like some companies out there just to throw in a 25 cent plastic case and slap a color label on an item.

4. USA CUSTOMERS: Most times, your package will arrive in about 5 days after we ship them depending on where you are at. However, lately the Post Office it seems has not been very cooperative with us and we\'ve had a couple of customers wait a few days longer than that. For that, we apologize. Please understand that we cannot control the Post Office, so we can\'t guarantee a delivery time. If the item does not arrive by the last promised ship date in , please email us and let us know, and we will make it right. The only unhappy customers we have are those that don\'t bother to contact us and don\'t give us a chance to fix the problem for them.

   NON-USA CUSTOMERS: Same deal above, except your packages typically have been taking about 2 weeks or so after we ship them. We\'ve noticed that maybe 20% of overseas customers have been waiting as long as 4+ weeks for these shipments. The only explanation we can come up with is that it must be stuck in some container in some dock waiting on customs clearance. It happens, and for those 20% of customers, we apologize, but there is very little we can do about that. Your disk will arrive or we will replace it.

5. Multiple items purchased by the same customer may or may not be shipped in the same package, at our discretion. We do not offer any additional discounts on multiple items other than the ones noted above.

6. Every effort has been made to accurately describe the contents of this collection. On very very rare occasions, typographical errors may occur and we may make an innocent mistake. These items are described to the very best of our abilities, and in as much detail as possible.

We consider a customer leaving us response, and response in general, to be a favor of goodwill. Our response is automated through auctiva and works in the following way to ensure each customer who leaves us response, gets the favor returned:

1. When your package arrives in satisfactory condition, we ask you to leave positive response so that we may close out the transaction.

2. An auto-notification is sent to auctiva after your positive response is received that the transaction is closed, and the system auto replies with a positive response.

3. If you leave us positive response, you should get a positive response in return within a short time, sometimes a day or two at most. If you leave a negative response, that situation is left for us to individually review. Again, we ask that you contact us first if you are contemplating negative response and inform us of the problem.

4. We do not leave response first. If you want positive response, please leave it for us and the favor is returned 100% of the time. If you do not leave us response, you will not get response from us.

5. Since all of our products are set to immediate payment required, we can not evaluate a buyer\'s payment time. The only thing we can evaluate is how easy a buyer is to work with after the sale. In order for us to do that, the transaction must be closed. For this reason, we require a buyer close the transaction first by leaving response so that we know we have successfully completed the deal.

We have developed this policy to ensure that we do not spend time leaving response for folks who do not bother to return the favor for us, as we have in the past. If for some reason you are not satisfied with this response policy, please refrain from purchasing. By purchasing our product, you acknowledge that you have read and accepted all of our policies.
