WATERMAN 12, HARD RUBBER c1910s, EXTRA-FINE EXTRA-FLEXIBLE COPPERPLATE NIB

Waterman 12, circa 1910s, in smooth black hard rubber. This was Waterman\'s moderately priced workhorse pen before the lever filler came along, marketed to students, artists, secretaries, working people.

The Waterman #2 nib isextra fine andandvery flexible, capable of quite a bit of line variation. It has excellent very fine hairlines and nice wide downstrokes.Flex nib fans know that it\'s much harder to find a nib with fine hairlines than it is to get flexibility per se, and this is a really good one. You can make fine lines almost as fine as the steel dip nibs that the historic pen men used in their spencerian script, yet of course you have the convenience of an iridium tipped nib that\'s smoother and less likely to get stuck on the upstrokes. With pressure the line gets pretty wide. The line variation is quite extreme, but it does take a little bit of pressure to make the tines separate, and it is possible to write with no shading. So while it\'s very flexible, it\'s not overly soft, andI wouldn\'t call it a wet noodle.

All in all, it\'sthe perfect pen forpointed-pencalligraphy styles such as copperplateand spencerian. See the writing samples below.

There\'s a dent in the hard rubber at the cap lip, and there\'s a crack along one side of this depression, see photos. Otherwise the pen is in typical used condition with lots of fading to the hard rubber, blotchy brownish color. The imprint is clear, and the \'12\' model number on the back of the barrel still has some of its original red color. There\'s a nicely fitting accommodation clip.

This is an eyedrop filler, so no restoration is needed in order to make it fill. You unscrew the section and put ink directly into the barrel with an eyedropper. The section unscrews as it should. The length is just over5 1/4 inches.
