Waterman 52 FDW BCHR Fountain Pen. 9K Bands 1923. 14K F/M Full Flex Nib. Rare.Just serviced. Works as when new.
Made in New York, USA 1922-23. It was then shipped to London, England by FDW (Frank Dan Waterman). Once in London it was given those 2 solid Gold Barrel ring bands. Fully hallmarked by the London Assay office in 1923 (date letter, h = 1923). 1923 is VERY early for F.D.W. ring bands. Also 1922-23 is about the time Waterman changed its Barrel and Nib Imprints to REG.U.S. etc rather than patent dates etc. So it is wonderful to have such an EXACT date of 1923 for this rare pen. Unique to FDW London import models.
The pen itself is made of BCHR (Black Chased Hard Rubber) it has the wonderful Chevron pattern design. Timeless classic. Very handsome pen indeed. Understated elegance. This pen is a Clipless example in that in NEVER had a clip. True writers pen. This is how you hope to find them. ALL parts original never polished, Re-Black or restored. Just an honest original. The Waterman\'s REG.US. etc Barrel imprints are deep and easy to read. Rare. The Chevron Chasing is deep and clean. The Hard Rubber has little to no oxidation at all and retains a wonderful Black colour that has warmed a little with age beautifully. Very rare to find so clean. Its Gold plated IDEAL logo Lever is also in amazing condition with no plate loss or brassing etc. Rare. Overall once in the hand to the naked eye this 93 year old looks positively new born.
If all that were not enough this pen ALSO has a superstar Nib. Perfect condition with zero damage etc. Fully flexible it is a simple Joy to use. A nib for the writing connoisseur. It can write ALL line widths. Extra Fine to Double Broad. Wow..... Nibs do not came any more creative than this. Writes with a very elegant Fine to Medium Fine line with Extra Fine line Side stroke at normal pressure. Really quite user friendly with little to no paper scratch or digging in etc. Rare for such a Fine nib. Its flexibility is also quite user friendly in that it is not too Soft, Loose or Twitchy. Never flexes by itself only on user command. Once commanded it can flex from Fine all the way to Double Broad on the Down Stroke when varying levels of pressure is applied. A Nib so creative its only limitation is the imagination and writing ability of the user. Grade A+++++++++++ Nib.
