WATERMAN 52 FOUNTAIN PEN 1920s, LONG-TINED EXTRA FLEXIBLE COPPERPLATE NIB
Price: US $755.00

Waterman 52 in black chased hard rubber with nickel trim, 1920s.

TheNo. 2 nibis ahard-to-find long-tined nib,and is extremely flexible, going from finetoextremely broad with very little pressure required. This shape is very attractive and usually, as here, indicates a very flexible nib.

Waterman seems to have made all of its nib sizesin short-, medium- and long-tined versions over the years, and some differences between nibs can be explained with reference to these shapes. The keyhole No. 7 Pink nib, for example, evolved from the long-tined No. 5 nib, and the No. 7 \'Brown\' nib, also fine and flexible, came from a medium tined nib. So even though many Browns write a lot like Pinks, they look different. It\'s interesting. I\'ve included a photo comparing this nib with a short and medium No. 2 (the two comparison pens are not included in this sale).

I\'d almost call it a wet noodle, but it\'s not quite soft enough -- some pressure is required to make the tines separate, and it\'s possible, with some concentration, to write with no shading. In any case for serious calligraphy you don\'t want a wet noodle -- you want more control than extreme softness offers.

With its extreme line variation and nice fine hairlines, this nib is an ideal nib for pointed-pen calligraphy styles like copperplate and spencerian. The style in the writing samples, with every downstroke fat, is more of an engrosser\'s hand.

Needless to say, it\'s a lot of fun to use. It really shows what\'s cool about vintage fountain pens -- it\'s a very capable calligraphy tool that carries its own ink supply and that you can carry around in your pocket, and it also has great charm and historical significance.

Excellent condition with nice dark color, good trim, and only minor wear to the chasing and imprints.

The writing samples are made using the pen itself, dipped inParker Quink blackink. The paper is a Rhodia pad with 5mm squares.
