Waterman 55 in black chased hard rubber with nickel trim,1920s.

The 55 is alarge pen. It\'s as long as, though slightly thinner than, a Parker Duofold Senior flattop, and its No. 5 nib is as big as the 1920s Duofold Senior nib. The pen was the basis for Waterman\'s Number 7 line, and the No. 5 nib is the same size as the keyhole 7 nibs found in the color-coded Number Seven ripple pens.

The nickel cap band is a nice touch; it looks good and it protects the cap lip. Not all 55s have this.

The nib is fine and extremely flexible. With no pressure it\'s very fine, and with pressure it makes very wide downstrokes. At their widest they exceed 2mm, and get pretty close to 3mm. (See the writing samples in the photos. The Rhodia paper has grids that are 5mm wide.)That\'s extreme contrast. In terms of softness, it\'s not quite \'wet noodle\' soft, retaining a pleasant snappiness whichaids control and makes it possible to get those interesting pointed-pen effects. The pen is very good for any pointed-pen calligraphy style like copperplate and spencerian.But it\'s also good for everyday use.

Good condition with no chips or cracks, nice clear imprints, good trim, some fading to the hard rubber\'s color.

Lever filler, restored and working with a new sac installed. Length is about 5 9/16 inches.

The writing samples are made using the pen itself, dipped inParker Quink blackink.The paper is a Rhodia pad with 5mm squares.
