WATERMAN No.7 PEN 1930s, RARE \'BROWN\' NIB & DISC-- XF FLEXIBLE COPPERPLATE NIB!

FINE HAIRLINES, FAT DOWNSTROKES, GREAT CALLIGRAPHY NIB

Waterman Number Seven pen, circa 1930-\'38, in black celluloid with gold filled trim. Keyhole nib marked \'brown\' with matching brown \'7\' disc at the end of the barrel.

This pen is part of Waterman\'s color coded series. It was only made for part of the plastic No. 7 pen\'s run, so is one of the rarest of the colors. Like the Pink, it was described as fine and flexible. It seems that it\'s only difference from the Pink nib was that it did not have the long shape of the Pink; it came from a Waterman tradition of flexible nibs with normal-length tines. Like the Pink, the Brown nib, when found in the wild today, varies quite a bit. All have fine points, probably what today would be called extra fine, but the flexibility is all over the place --some are just pleasantly springy, and others are soft and noodle-like.

The Brown nib, then, shares many qualities with the Pink nib but is a little less showy -- it\'s the thinking man\'s Pink nib, as my Boston pen guru once put it.

This is one of the more flexible Brown No. 7 nibs I\'ve seen. It\'s not a wet noodle, but firm enough to give plenty of control. At its widest, it makes a line that\'s probably 2.5mm wide or thereabouts. Its big advantage is its hairline -- it\'s quite fine. Flex pen fans know that it\'s the contrast that\'s important, the line variation, and that it\'s harder to find a nib with a nice fine hairline than to find a nib that\'s merely flexible. The range this nib gives -- from very fine at its finest, to respectably but not earth-shatteringly wide at its widest, makes it excellent for pointedpen calligraphy styles like copperplate and spencerian. And it\'s a Waterman, so the tines are wonderfully resilient, springing back into shape after being flexed, time after time.

The pen itself is very usable but has lots of flaws. There are several cracks in the cap lip -- four by my count. The cap only turns about a quarter turn when screwing it on, though it fits securely. There\'s a fair amount of wear to the gold filled trim. But it\'s perfectly fine to carry around in your pocket, and the nib makes it worth doing so.

Restored and working with a new sac installed. Length is about 5 5/16 inches.
