Windup INDIAN MOTORCYCLE by Masudaya - Prewar Japan
This 10.2 inch long, nickel plated Indian Motorcycle was made by Masudaya (Modern Toys) of Japan around the mid to late 1930s and consists of steel and brass components with black rubber for the tires. Although much of it is riveted together, many parts can be dismantled. The bike\'s clockwork mechanism, with built-in key, is linked to the rear wheel by a \"chain\" (a long flexible wire spring) and the lever on the side of the gas tank acts as the on/off switch. The angle of the front wheel can be set manually. The nickel plating has thinned out in some areas and the wheel centers show some paint loss. (Since the wheels are removable, the paint can easily be restored, although I\'ve chosen to leave this option up to its future owner).
The toy is complete and the mechanism is in good working order. Its sculptural qualities capture the feel of this iconic bike much more convincingly than any lithographed tin versions.An almost identical motorcycle was also produced by Kuramochi (C.K.) and both companies seemed to have made a sidecar model, as well as a three-wheel delivery bike variation.
