An original WW1 British Red Cross training manual, published inOctober1914. This was number 1 in a four volume series of very detailed medical handbooks. It was intended for use by R.A.M.C. medical staff, doctors, orderlies and V.A.D. nurses, and includes information on anatomy, first aid, theemergency treatment of injuries, various types of wounds, the evacuation and transport of the wounded, and the work of stretcher bearers. This series of books was widely used throughout WW1, both on the front line in France and in V.A.D. hospitals in Britain. The book is very well illustrated throughout with line drawings and diagrams, including 163 illustrations in the text. It includes instructions for the treatment of bullet wounds and the use of the \'rifle splint\', which involved using the standard service rifle lashed on to the broken leg as an emergency splint. There are also a number of interesting period advertisments for medical equipment and supplies.
