From a collection of items belonging to 2ndLieutenant Christopher D. Wyles, a British Officer serving with the 4th Battalion of theHampshire Regiment in India and Mesopotamia during the First World War. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1918, Captain in 1919 and became a Company Commander. I acquired this book along with several of 2nd Lieutenant Wyles\' other books and photographic items (all of which I am currently listing).
1/4th Battalion Hampshire Regiment 1914-18:On9th October 1914 the battalion sailed for India, landing at Karachi on 11th November 1914. They were attached to 4th (Rawalpindi) Brigade in 2nd (Rawalpindi) Division in January 1915.On 18th March 1915 they landed at Basra with 33rd Indian Brigade and remained in Mesopotamia and Persia for the rest of the war. Battalion HQ and one Company were captured at Kut-el-Amara on 29th April 1916. The remainder formed a Composite Battalion with the 1/5th Buffs, and were transferred to 14th Indian Division. In November 1916, they transferred to 36th Indian Brigade.On 2nd January 1918 the Hampshires entered Persia with Lt-Col Matthews\' Column. C Company occupied Krasnodovsk on 26th August and pushed on to Merv; D Company occupied Resht and Enzeli. A small detachment under Lt Fisher occupied Baku between 4th August and 15th September 1918. In November Battalion HQ was at Zinjan. In June 1919 two Companies were attached to Lt-Col Matthews\' Motor Mobile Column and fought at Resht in August 1919.
How to Speak Hindustani in a Month (1917) is an original Hindustani handbook from 1917, intended for the use of soldiers and Imperial civil servants serving in India. Full of all sorts of useful phrases, such as \'Who is with the Sahib?\', \'What nonsense\', \'You are a fool\' and \'Oh you clown!\'. With a large folding chart of useful words and their translations into Hindustani. Although not signed by 2/Lt C. D. Wyles, this book was part of a collection of the books that he used while serving in India and the Middle East during WW1.
