Excellent condition example of a U.S. M-1905/42 (Type IV) bayonet by a very scarce maker; WILDE DROP FORGE & TOOL, or "WT". During it's production and service life, the M-1905/42 became the standard bayonet for use with the M1 Garand battle rifle. The Type IV M1904/42 bayonet went into production in 1942, and is often referred to as the M1942 bayonet by collectors. These bayonets retained the original 16" blade length of the previousM1905 patterns, and the parkerized finish. Starting in 1943 many of these 16" bayonet blades werecut down and shortened to a 10" blade and designated as a M1905E1, often simply called the M1 "cut down" bayonet. M1905/42 Type IV bayonets were produced by six contractors, amongthesesix was Wilde Drop Forge & Tool. WT is known to have produced approximately 60,000bayonets; or only 4% of the total WWll bayonet production! In addition, very few16" bayonets survived the cutting, or shortening process. Thus; making any original16' bladed bayonets scarce, and an original 16" bladed WT bayonet even more difficult to find. In addition; this WT bayonet features the original,distinct two tone color grip panels that are unique to only WT bayonets! Examples of original 16" WT bayonets in this examples conditioncan be considered a rare find. This WT bayonet is in far better condition than the last three WT bayonets that I've seen sold.The blade hasNOT been sharpened, and only shows minor wear, predominately at that blades tip. There is also a crack in the left handle that does not go all the way through-this is common with WT bayonet grips.Comes complete with USN marked 16" scabbard that is also in excellent condition.
