This is a very historic group that includes his Naval Aviators Flight Log book to a US Marine Corps pilot who flew with VMSB-143 and was KIA on 3/21/43 in the Solomon Islands while flying an Avenger ( TBF-1) . He earned a DFC for his actions. I have scanned a copy of a newspaper article showing the citation. His squadron was re-designated VMTB-143 in June 1943 after he was KIA.
The Flight Logbook lists all of his flights from flight school up until the day he was MIA. The last entry in the log says \" Missing in Action\" . It has flights in it from April 1942- March 1943. One page is loose , but it intact.
The document prepared by the USMC as a posthumous service certificate is also present. Its similar to a discharge. These documents themselves are scarce.
The most incredible part of this group is the DIARY. After he was KIA another pilot in his squadron wrote the final entry in the diary with his heart felt message to the MIA pilot\'s parents. What is even more amazing is that there is a letter tucked in the diary to the pilot\'s parents saying he had found the diary in May 1943 and held onto it for over a year ON ESPIRITO SANTOS. The man was a Seabee and he sent the diary on to the pilots parents after he left back to the USA. A year and a half after the pilot was killed, his parents received the diary from someone they didnt even know. The Diary has entries from March 1942 to March 1943.
This is an outstanding group to a Marine Pilot that is very unique.
