Juanita Burns set a new woman’s altitude record on December 28, 1930. She reported that she climbed for 30 minutes after her third and final altimeter stopped at 26,000 feet. Ruth Alexander set a previous record at 21,598 feet. Although not recognized officially, Elinor Smith recorded a flight to 27,418 feet. Juanita believed that she reached 28,000 feet before descending.

Juanita announced in February 1931 that she planned to set a new coast-to-coast record that month but I have not been able to find any evidence that she did. She did flyher Bull Pup to 35 Southern California airports on May 19, however. Newspapers reported that she would attempt a non-stop flight from Seattle to Tokyo as well as a round-the-world flight in theCity of Los Angeles. The O. W. Timm Airplane Corporation built her open cockpit high parasol wing airplane for the flight. It was the fifth Timm Collegiate model built. To raise money for the record attempt, Juanita sold stamps with her plane on it. The projected date of departure wasApril 1932.
