I must first admit that I think I am somewhat in over my head as I'm not really a web designer or anything like that. I'm just trying to set up UBB so that my buddies and I can stay in touch. So please stick with me - I may not phrase things the proper way!

Anyway, I'm trying to install the freeware version on prohosting ( http://odin.prohosting.com/mflickin/ubb/cp.html ) and I keep getting the following message:
"Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, []webmaster@free.prohosting.com[/] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log."

As I said earlier - I apologize for my lack of knowledge in explaining my problem, but I've provided all the information I know. Your help is greatly appreciated (in advance).

Ensure that all files except images have been uploaded in ascii and that permissions are set correctly. If you used CuteFTP to upload, switch to WS_FTP as many people are having problems using CuteFTP for ascii upload.

I used WS_FTP95 for uploading the files. The "welcome" e-mail I got from ProHosting said to set all permissions to 755, no matter what the cgi instructions said.

As for ASCII, etc., I double-checked that I was loading in ASCII. I also checked the extensions for ASCII, and everything looked OK.

I'm not sure of where to look next.

Ignore what Prohosting says about permissions settings. Set the 4 variable files, the Members directory, Admin5.cgi, and the ubb directory with 777 permissions and then please post a copy of your permissions here. To view permissions in WS_FTP, click the DirInfo button.

I changed the permissions like you suggested, but it looks like they changed themselves back (if that's possible). I hope I pasted the correct information.

Most permissions are set incorrectly. Permissions cannot change themselves back.

Change the following:

All files in the cgi-bin directory should be set with 755 (-rwxr-xr-x) permisions except the 4 variable files which should be set with 777 (-rwxrwxrwx) permissions. The Members directory should be set with 777 (drwxrwxrwx) permissions. Admin5.cgi should be set with 777 permissions. The ubb directory also needs to be set with 777 permissions.

I am totally confused, then. I am using WS_FTP. I right-click on the file/directory, check the boxes for the permission and click OK. Then when I click the DirInfo button the permissions aren't as I just set them. Perhaps I don't understand how to chmod!

After changing permissions, before clicking DirInfo you need to click the Refresh button. After it refreshs the directory click DirInfo again to view the current permissions.

I am even more confused now (if that's possible). I right-clicked on the items, set the permissions to what they should be, clicked refresh, then click DirInfo, and the permissions aren't as I set them.

I gave up last night in frustration. I checked back today and the permissions aren't as I set them before I turned in last night.

I am using WS_FTP95 LE. Should I be using a different version of WS_FTP?

Also, I appreciate all your help thus far. I wish I could figure it out so you could help someone else!

The version of WS_FTP you are using is fine. I'm not sure why you're permissions keep changing back, but if you'd like you can email me your FTP information and I will set them for you.

mjrand,

Thank you for your help. I figured out my problem and everything is working well. I had to chmod each file individually. Instead I was selecting multiple files and attempting to chmod. This is probably a basic idea, but it wasn't readily apparent to me and I just took a chance.

Hi,
I'm glad to hear someone can figur this out. I have ProHosting too and I'm having problems too. I've read the last 10 posting here and feel like I've done things right but I am getting this error when I click on General settings:
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /cgi-bin/cpanel.cgi on this server."

I could use any tips I can get. I'm trying to install UBB on www.iluvtogolf.com
and been at it for a while now. Thanks

frank, please don't post on the tail-end of other's troubleshooting sessions. It can be very easy to miss those types of posts.

Before you post your new thread though, make sure you have directory and file permissions set correctly. If you do think they are set correctly, then please post in the new thread a DirInfo of your home directory and a DirInfo on the contents of your cgi-bin. DirInfo is a function available in WS_FTP. If you don't have WS_FTP you can get it for free from http://www.hotfiles.com

Also, please include a direct url to your control panel (cp.html) in your new thread. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
