I can't register because to register the UBB needs to upgrade memberships. However, while UBB is upgrading memberships, no membership can be registered.

I get to the registration form, fill out the username, password, and email address. I then click on "Submit Registration".

The result is a page that says, and I quote:

"We are temporarily upgrading our Memberships. This process only takes a minute or two. Please try registering again in a couple of minutes. Thank you!"

I tried to register numerous times, with different data. What do I need to do?

Your installation has not properly finished yet - probably your Member file structure has not been converted.
Can you FTP into the Members dir and check that:

1) A dir called OldMembers is present
2) There's no Admin5.cgi present, but a 00000001.cgi instead

If not, please check if your Members dir has write and delete permissions and try resubmitting general settings.

hope that helps.

The two posts are helpful.

I have Admin5.cgi in my members directory. And there was a time that browsers could read and execute only. In working out the kinks in my installation, I changed so browsers coule read, execute, and write. I later changed so browsers could read, execute, write, and delete.

I'll look for the following files and delete them:

Admin5.cgi
holdmems.cgi
temp.file

I'll report back with the results.

Thank you for your help.

Sorry,

I get the exact same results.

( the message about ...temporarily upgrading our Memberships )

Maybe I need to re-index the threads?

I did "update threads" and "index". I still cannot register new members.

If you want to see what I mean, the link to the bulletin board is:

http://link-logic-craft.com/BBLink.html

If anyone can get themselves registered on my UBB, then I'll be a monkey's uncle!

Please give me more advice.

like ted said, after deleting the files make sure all your paths are correct and all the right directories are writable. then try to register and update threads. there is a ubb_test.cgi file that can help you figure out if somethign is wrong, try running that.

SUCCESS!!!

I think my mistake was in using Microsoft's Web Publishing Wizard to ftp all my files to my Web-hosted server. I think that Front Page and Web Publishing Wizard do something so that the UBB system cannot delete files.

To make my installation of UBB work, I first uninstalled everything, deleted all the directories I created (both the ones I created overtly and the ones I created inadvertently in using Microsoft's Web Publishing Wizard).

The FTP program that comes with Microsoft's Windows 95/98/Me is adequate but tedious. It is FREE, though. In deleting files from the server, use

dir -a

to see ALL the files. That is how to see the "_vti_cnf" directories that Web Publishing Wizard sneaks in.

After I deleted everything. I went back and followed the instructions. After uploading all the files, I had to give "browser" user rights to read, write, execute, and delete for ALL directories that pertain to UBB.

I also gave the "browser" user all rights again after running the UBB General Settings, which creates some directories. I did that just to make sure. I don't know for sure whether the second time was necessary.

I suppose this is another case of Microsoft strikes again!

The Web Publishing Wizard was very quick and easy to use to get all the files loaded and all the subdirectories made very quickly. The only problem is that by using the Web Publishing Wizard and Front Page, UBB will never work. The Wizard makes hidden directories and prevent browser based deletions.

I can imagine helping someone else to install with problems that matched my own. "Exactly HOW did you get the UBB files to the server, WS_FTP, CuteFTP? ...you didn't use MS Publishing Wizard, did you?"
