When a poll is in the cache (accelerator), it will not update the number of voters in the actual thread itself. It does update in the popup though.

I just noticed this too.

If it can't be fixed it would be better if didn't even show the number of votes inside the post.

The cache is used regardless of the accelerator's presence. The accelerator is just that - it makes getting to the cache faster.

Poll votes only clear the cache if the cached copy was created over five minutes ago. Viewing a poll topic will create a new version if the cached copy is over 30 minutes old.

The count is just cosmetic - there's no data loss involved here.

I realised no data was lost. Was getting a bit frustrated though when I found 'no-one' voting, when otherwise I post a topic I wait five minutes and hup - answers gallore!

That's the problem with the voting total not being accurate on the topic's page.

With a brand new poll it might appear that no one voted when in fact there has already been several votes. I think some people might be turned off from being the first voter so they'll skip it. For this reason it's probably better to remove the vote total from the topic page unless there is another way that that total could be updated in real time.

Gotta agree here, it looks like no one is voting and that's a bad thing. Sorry Charles.

One of my Moderators wrote me this morning:

Quote
John, found a possible glitch... even though 3 have voted, the summary shows 0 have voted... same thing on Janet's test poll....

Poll Information
This poll contains 1 question(s). 0 user(s) have voted.
You may not view the results of this poll without voting.
Didn't take too long for people to notice and think that no one is voting.

I think this needs to be addressed somehow...

We can and will not clear the cache on each vote. We have performance problems already - do you want your server to topple over?

Charles:

I see your point... make sense.

Just a question... how much of a additional performance hit (if any) is running the polls/allowing the polls causing. Things seem to have slowed down since I added this to the site.

I realize running the who's online causes some of the accelerator use to be cut but does the polls add to the hit on the server more.

Must upgrade server soon!

Each topic that is a poll will have the cache cleared on it every 30 minutes (upon view) or five minutes (upon vote)

Effectively, each poll you have cuts your cached hits, which will cut into performance.

Same goes with PNTF - turning it on can cut into cache hits by up to 20%.

Hm, might better turn it off then and wait for things to clear up...

Or just turn it on in one forum, and then only for your Member/Mod/Admin groups, not junior members. That'll reduce the use quite a bit... after the initial shock of "OHMIGAWD, WE CAN USE POLLS!" wears off, you can open it up to the rest.

A day after, the use is down and the boards are running a bit better. Good suggestion.

By the way Charles, everytime you upgrade the boards, does it clear the cache and take a while to build up? It seems that when I do the upgrade, it goes a little slow for a few days and then things pick up again.

Yes, the Upgrade button clears the cache, adds new Wordlet entries, and performs some basic sanity checking. In the future it will take care of the additional tasks, i.e. rebuilding members / forum stats.

Question... I've posted a poll, but don't think I'll be doing it again in the future. If I disable the polling feature, what happens to that poll I posted?

The poll will turn into a normal topic. I'm not sure if the block inside the first post will stay or not. If it does, it will still probably have the vote / view buttons.

Hmmm... don't like that 0 showing.

Can we have that line removed from the initial page? This is probably the best solution. That way people know they have to click on the poll to see who has voted instead of thinking that no one has.

That way, we don't have to mess with the acceleration at all...
