Several of us are having problems with SMTP features failing after upgrading to 6.1.0.3. Is there a fix yet?

I'm hoping to get the next beta to you an Monday afternoon. That fix is included. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

You should also be able to grab the smtp.pm from the 6.1.0.3 .zip and use that, it will make the error go away.

David,
How should I use the smtp.pm from 6.1.0.3? I've got it, uploaded and replaced the existing one, and still get the same error. I'd prefer to get this one working rather than go to the next beta. Any ideas?

I think Dave thought you were using UBB 6.2 beta 1 in which case there was a bug with SMTP.pm.

What are the _exact_ errors you are getting with SMTP.pm in UBB 6.1.0.3?

Hey again qasic,
The errors are documented in

this thread.

They started for me (or at least I first became aware of it) right after upgrading to 6.1.0.3. I know it was working shortly before as I sent email to all my members notifying them of the upgrade. Now, no matter what I try (IP address, alternate SMTP boxes, etc..) I am unable to get UBB to send anything out. My hosting provider (Interland) IS able to send mail from my server though. The message looks like a configuration error in UBB, but if it is, its a VERY subtle one.

I think the key here is that NOTHING changed except the upgrade to 6.1.0.3, and others are getting the exact same errors.

Any ideas?

qasic (and anyone else interested),
I've found another thread with the same problems, and addressing Interland specifically (they told me nothing had changed at all. What a surprise, huh?) Take a peek at the first couple of posts in this thread, if you don't mind:

Interland Woes

This doesn't make any sense to me, as my email addresses in cp.cgi are both valid and correct. Is it possible that including the address in the code could make it work?

Why in the world would they reject mail originating from their own domains? These guys are truly brilliant...

Well,
It appears this is an Interland issue. For those following this thread, here is what I have sent to them. I'll keep you posted on any replies they send, but I strongly suspect I'll be moving 30+ domains in the next couple of weeks <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Interland Support Ticket:

First off, I suggest this problem be handled by level 2 or higher, as I have already worked with everyone else and am still having this problem. I understand that Interland's upper-level support and CTO are aware of this issue.

I have a CGI/PERL-based messageboard running on my website (Ultimate Bulletin Board, v 6.1.0.3, http://www.infopop.com) . One of the features of the program is that it handles the registration process automatically by sending email containing passwords/information to newly registered members. Until recently, this feature was working just fine. However, for the past few weeks, I have been getting errors indicating that the SMTP server (mailhub.registeredsite.com) does not exist, or refused the connection. I have tried to troubleshoot this on my own, and with your telephone tech support. I have now found out that the problem stems from filters Interland has placed on their email servers (see these links: http://community.infopop.net/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=729094322&f=3913070413&m=6493006673 http://community.infopop.net/6/ubb.x?a=t...5063#9743065063 and http://community.infopop.net/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=729094322&f=3913070413&m=2943069253 )

The problem is well documented, and obviously lies with the registeredsite mail servers rejecting the local SMTP relay (I have tried mailhub, mail2, and their respective IP addresses for acceptance, all to no avail). It has already cost Interland numerous hosting accounts, and mine are, at best, in question.

I need this fixed immediately, without modifying my code (which is entirely unnecessary, and in my opinion, an irresponsible suggestion for a simple mis-configuration issue).

If Interland has new policies which prohibit local relays, please tell us now. Without quick resolution I will be forced to move all of my domains to another hosting provider. I pay too much for too many domains to have something this simple fail.

Hi,

Unfortunately, I do _not_ know of a way for you for UBB to specify a user login/password to the SMTP server. Perhaps Infopop may know more?

There is no possibility of using a module other than Net::SMTP, which to the best of my knowledge, does not offer the ability to authenticate.

The core problem is Interland's new mail system.

Talk to them about it, not us - it's out of our hands.

Charles,
I am talking to them about it, and do recognize that it is their problem. If you got another impression from my post, I apologize. I was only trying to make my information available to the others who are having the same problem with Interland. It isn't an authentication issue, Interland's servers won't allow the relay. Why? I have no clue, but it effectively shuts a protected board down.

I was directing most of that at Qasic and any Interland employees that may perchance be reading this topic, actually. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

David, we went through the same problem in the middle of November after we moved one of our Hostpro legacy accounts to the new Interland packages. All of the sudden, we lost all email abilities. We got no where back then but at least they seemt o be recognizing that it is their problem. During all of this time, we have moved over 6 accounts off of their servers and plan to move all.

I understand your frustration and for your information, it is not Infopop, it is strictly Interland. We tried everything ( http://community.infopop.net/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=729094322&f=1863088313&m=1063092543 ) ourselves but gave up and moved to Dellhost - very nice support btw.

Good luck.

Yes Kenya,
I saw your earlier posts regarding DellHost, and may want to discuss that with you more in the future, in a more appropriate forum.

I know its Interland, and what angers me most is that they made these "policy changes" without notifying their subscribers. I host about 40 sites with them. When they lose one, they're going to lose them all. And that day is fast approaching (no reply to my support ticket in 3 days, now).

Thanks for the info, and I hope you won't mind if I follow up with you on DellHost.

I run my own web server, own Exchange server, etc., and this is NOT just an Interland problem. Exchange Server is set to relay mail for all the IP addresses in our LAN; in fact, UBB is installed on my Exchange server.

Please don't write this off as a host-specific problem, because there are a lot of people who experienced this problem when they upgraded to 6.1.0.3. That's the version we're running (the only one we've ever used).

We'll know soon enough.
Based on what I've heard from these boards, and the lack of ANYTHING from Interland, I just set up a new account at DellHost. I'll let you know how it goes, but I suspect all will go well. It has for others.

My fingers are all crossed though, just to be sure <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

tmac, this particular problem is with Interland.

We have had dozens upon of dozens of phone calls and support tickets from Interland customers experiencing issues with the new mailing system.

Your issues are totally unrelated. Please open a new topic in the Post Installation Troubleshooting forum, including your version and URL.

I'm going to close this topic now - David and Kenya, please continue your web hosting conversation in the web hosting forum. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
