Hi,
I am trying to use the 'search' feature of my forums. The problem is that it lists all forums that ever existed in the "Search Forum" field.
I don't want this field to list any forums that are not currently visibile.
Is the only way to remove forums from this drop-down box to actually go and physically delete each forum that you don't want to show up there?

Also, how do I actually go about deleting a forum?
Thanks!

What version of the UBB are you running? Also, can we have a URL to your forums.

hi there... have you actually disabled the forum - or do you just have it hidden? i believe disabling it will remove its contents from search results.

Why don't both? I mean if you have it set to be hidden from the forum it should hide it from the search also :/...

Potentially... I think the concept is that if you don't want anyone to have access to it, make it private. Therefore, a hidden forum is just hidden. (But, I'm not 100% sure on that!)

exactly, a hidden forum should be hidden, it's not hidden if you can see it on the search page...

Hi,
the forum is here:
http://www.superiorpics.com/cgi-bin/ultimate/ubb/ultimatebb.php

Notice how the "search" function lists a whole bunch of different forums. I think this is because all of the forums are "enabled" but only a few are actually "visible". I will try to fix the problem by either "disabling" the forums I don't want to show up, or simply deleting them.
It does seem a little odd that you can search through forums which the administrator has specifically gone and hidden from users.
Cheers

Yeh i've verified this issue on 3 differant sites (2 unmodified!). If a user hides a forum it shouldn't be visible via search... It's evidently not "hidden" just not shown on the main forum display...

chuckee - please open a support ticket using this link: https://www.infopop.com/q/q.php?action=pool_query&num=16

In the ticket body, include the URL to this topic, and a request that the ticket be assigned to me.

Note that we're holding back the 6.7.1 release until I get a ticket on this, as we'll want to get this problem taken care of if it ends up being a bug.

Charles,
thanks. By the way, that form requires way too much information - who wants to give away their FTP username and password, for example, just to report a bug in software they have paid for?

Without FTP information, I will be unable to examine your board. Without being able to examine your board, I will be unable to correct the issue. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Hold on, there is nothing unusual about my board that makes it any different from any other board where the administrator has "hidden" any of their forums.

There is no way I give away any of my passwords to people I have never even met over the Internet (I don't even give them out to close personal friends).

As far as I can see, a software developer should be able to correct bugs in their own work without having to delve into the personal realm of their clients. After all, it is a pretty basic bug.

If I was able to duplicate the problem locally, then I would not need to examine your board. But I can't. So I need to. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

As your board is one showing the symptom, it's the best candidate to examine and use for troubleshooting.

I'll take another shot at duplicating the problems tomorrow morning, but working directly on your board is the best and fastest route towards solving the problem that you reported.

You can't blame me for trying to fix your board. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

My board? To ne honest I don't really care about this bug, as I can just go and disable the forums as a workaround.

Personally I prefer the sort of customer service where the customer is to be treated with an air of respect, and his whims, no matter how stupid they may seem to the developer, are catered for. What I don't like is the situation where the customer feels like he has to tiptoe over broken glass with the developer in order not to offend their sensitivites over their software they have been working on for the past few years. Certainly in this case, I get the feeling that I can not express myself fully without the fear of being criticized for my opinion. And I am a paying customer!

There are many reasons why I might not want to give anyone my username/passwords! Think about the situation where I use the same password in different situations. You should be fully understanding of my feeling this way, rather than trying to make me feel guilty for not exposing my entire server to you via FTP.

Chuckee -

Asking for FTP & board access is standard policy. Without the information, we can not investigate the bug as you see it - we can only investigate the but as we see it - which in many cases, might not be at all. In MANY cases, certain bugs only appear on certain systems or with certain environmental variables and it would be utterly impossible for Infopop to duplicate every server & environment configuration available. If you'd like to help us by reporting this as a bug, we'd sure appreciate it. If you'd like to submit a ticket to discuss the bug or the situation, please feel free to do so - you can put it to my & Charles' attention.

A way I've found to "fix" this is to take those hidden forums, and make it so they're not in any category. That removes them from the search page. If they're in a category, but hidden, they show up on the search page.

I'd offer my info, but I've "slightly" modified my boards, although I haven't touched the search features

I've added some code to the 6.7.1 release that uses a brute-force method to ensure that forums that are invisible should no longer show up or become searchable.

For record keeping purposes, this fix landed in rv210.2.8.
