I've been thinking about reworking the wwwthreads code to include support for templates...but I just thought of an idea that I don't think would be too difficult to implement with a table that relates users to one another, that would take precedence over my own desire for templates. An ICQ type of buddy list for registered board users...

Scream: One question I have though, about it's implementation is, the Number field isn't specified as UNIQUE, would changing it to unique have any effect on the database, good or bad? Because this would require having unique UserID's. I realize it's an auto_increment so the likelyhood of duplication is near impossible, but I suppose it could happen under very rare circumstances?

How many people would interested in a mod like this? Depending on the number of interested people, I may do it...so anyone reading this cast your vite...for Templates or Buddy List...though I'll tell you now I already have a major preference in the buddy list, I think it could be more useful to visitors. The templates are to make my life easier, while visitors are potential customers, and who's always right? *smile*

You might want to wait on the buddy list thing because Rick was talking about working on setting up user sessions to replace some of the cookie stuff that Threads does now. The user sessions could make a big difference in the way the buddy system/ user IDs.

I'd like to have templates because I always do a lot of display stuff, but I don't know if you set up templates for the demo version whether that would be easy to translate for those of us using the registered version. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

I just don't understand the point to a buddy list if you can't get to IM or chat with your buddies... so if this system is not set to work in cunjunction with some chat or IM system, I don't really get the point. What am I missing?

I hear what you're saying, but...
There are alot of people who use libraries, college PC's etc. that don't necessarily have access to use their own software for chatting. Besides which, I can think of a number of good uses for such a system...as an example with private messaging, you can build a drop down box (or multiple select) of users so people don't have to type in usernames. You can also use this feature to restrict simply typing in a users name and flooding their "inbox" with ridiculous repetitive messages, it adds a form of security to the Private Messaging system. Or say you're running a B2B site and you want your users to be able to communicate easily and directlywith each other through your site...without the need for Chat software...I can think of unlimited applications for a buddy list that don't involve chats. Or with this in conjunction with the Who's Online feature, you can build a table to show users on login which of their buddies are using the board. The private messaging though not as fast as say for example ICQ, does emulate the ability to quickly send messages backand forth to one another. It may not be a great idea, but that's why I'm asking...though myself I feel it creates a more personalized user interaction on your site...being one of the primary reasons for returning visitors, it could be a useful tool.

I guess my use of the words buddy list have a predefined notion and wasn't the right words to use, but the idea is to personalize the user experience while using your site, allowing users to create a list of users they interact with on a regular basis through the message board does this, and this is what I meant by buddy list.

Ah but you forget LinkSQL already has user sessions build in...my W3T free is already using sessions *grin*, well not USING sessions but can support it with some mods I can import from LinkSQL.

Ah, but I tend to think of what would be useful to the average user when posting hacks here. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> I have written quite a few hacks that are so specific to my site they wouldn't be useful to anyone else. The demo version may be running user sessions rather than cookies, but will your hack be useful to the grand majority of people here who are running the registered version?

I haven't forgotten anything about LinksSQL. I don't own it, so I just don't know a heck of a lot about it other than it's Links and runs mySQL rather than flatfile. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> And what does a W3T hack have to do with Links? I can see where you might integrate tham as I said earlier, but again, this isn't a hack that's going to be very useful to the general W3T community.

Point taken...
I guess I'm going off on tangents because I see so many possibilities with the combined power of WWWThreads & LinkSQL...and I'm also very new to the prog so I don't know much about it, Yet! And I'm simply enjoying the speculations of where the options may lead <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />

Yes, I understand better how that idea could definitely enhance the user experience and the community sense on a site. Trying to follow up on the "what-could-it-do-without-chat" question, I was thinking of a Delphi like system where you would not only know who's online, but get a historic of the last visits (along with login/logout times). I think this maybe could be combined with your pal list. I don't know about feasibility tough :-\

You'll definitely get to like it a lot. Several months ago there wasn't much activity going on here along the lines of users adding to the program and writing hacks. But there's been a lot of user buzz about the program and more people are coming around to see just how good it really is. And those of us who have been here a while are getting a lot more active and bolder with our hacks too.

And I can see tons of possibilites for merging the 2 scripts. Too bad I have absolutely no valid excuse to tell my boss our site will just die without LinksSQL. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> I'd love to play with that. Oh, that could eat up whole months of my life!

I'm getting closer and closer to it...just a matter of funds at this point, if I hadn't just bought UBB like two weeks ago, I'd spend the $200 in a heart beat. I just don't know what I'll do with the UBB? OHH The Dilemna's!

I went ahead and got my license...I finally came to realize that the more customization I do to it on the free version....the more work I'm gonna have when I do decide to upgrade! So I might as well so my mods on a fully compatible version! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I'l write 'em but they still may not be all that compatible...I just went through every file, changing all table name references in every SQL statement so I can keep my tight integration with LinkSQL. When I make one that's good though and shows alot of interest...I can always recode the SQL statements to fit the original version. It's not as hard as you think...just open up all your files in a good text programming environment like homesite and do one massive search and replace on specific CASE SENSITIVE terms "U_" and replace it with nothing...though it does destroy alot of unrelated matching strings...the worst was I accidentally ran a Search & Replace, forgetting to check the Case Sensitive...on B_, db_disconnect and db_connect loved it! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" /> It's been quite the day to say the least. I'll try and get that PM Attach mod out for you 5.0 users that are interested...in a compatible version of course!

Was wondering where you'd got to, Rod. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I've had a few of those search-n-replace commands go bad on me too... recently enough to still sting. I look forward to seeing what you've come up with.

Hey I get to try and install my own Hack! This rules...
Wouldn't that suck if I never got around to e-installing my own for private messaging? I guess that could say something about how useful it is...

What Spell check came up with grin
"got around to <font color=green>e-installing</font color=green> <font color=red>[Einstein]</font color=red> my own for priv"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Sorry I had to share this it's awesome! *huge laugh* I don't know an icon for it though...
