Good suggestion but might be a bit tough. Because some of the sort by options on the user list aren't done alphabetially, so if you are sorting by registration date then this would not work. Also, since this is a multi-language program many foreign usernames don't even use our a-z letters.
This is one of those things where eventually I may be able to come up with an idea on how to actually do it, but not enough time for 5.1.
Scream, may I make a huge request regarding the User List? Can we have the power to turn the option OFF? Our site has over 33,000 accounts registered. Going in as an admin just to add a moderator takes forever, if we have 1000 people all listing out all 33,000 names at the same time, the server will crawl to a halt. So please tell me that this feature is optional? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
On the other hand, do you feel the way the User List is setup that it would not impact a very large set of forums? My concern has always been speed and performance. I love the feature, I just fear it will slow things down for us.

I really believe the user list, as it is, is not very functional, but a step in the direction of something very cool (IMO). The real strength of a "user list" is actually the ability to search. What use do I have for an endless (assuming a succesful forum) list of names. What I would like to have is a way of finding users who share my interests (PHP for example) according to their profiles, and then see their posts, send them a PM, whatever.
This board is not the best example where something like this would be useful (we all share here the same interest, wwwthreads) but imagine how it could work in a general interest board.... Even with a very focused board like this, I believe the possibilities are endless (I would really like to get in touch with PHP programmers, see what they are doing, they opinions are very important to me, etc.... Note that this is just an example. I know nothing about PHP)
I say this is a step in that direction because I've been looking at what UBB hackers did with their board. The "users list" hack started like this and now it has the ability to search...
BTW I have been "pushing" this for a long time.... This is something that I plan to hack into my board (once I have it online, and I somehow manage to pull it off) but I believe would be a great addition to wwwthreads, giving it an edge over every other board (this is a hack for UBB, not an easy one from what I read). However a lot of people don't seem to consider this as important as I do, so maybe it should stay as it is (I was told this is not a hard hack, so I am sure I'll have it anyway....and I guess not every board out there would use this feature)...
