Since I only submitted 2 items on my own "wish list" for the new upcoming version, I thought I would add one more. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I would really like to see the "upload userpic" hack added as a default feature. There are many users who simply don't have their own website/server from which to call their "userpic" from. Being able to upload it from their own HD would allow them to do this. Although I haven't read where anyone else has asked for this, I believe there is a strong desire by many others to have this included also, albeit a silent one at this point.

And, I would add my vote to have a "jump box" added to all or most pages, especially to the Control Panel and the PM pages.

I'm in for the 'upload userpic' too. Anyway, there's one more reason for it: when a page is displayed, several off-site connections are made from the client in order to get the pictures and the total load time is increased if any of those is slow or does not resolve quickly. Moreover, the user ability to set this image (url/img submit) should be admin configurable.

I'm all for it too... I've had this hack installed for ages and most of my users use it instead of the linking. One more thing that speaks for it: When their site is temporarily down, we get the broken image symbol displayed by the browser, which can be prevented by uploading the image. Also, sometimes users take their site down, then the image is gone for good, and all older posts will show the broken image symbol. So, my vote goes 100% to adding this hack to the release!

As long as we can set a file size limit by default and an extension list, so if they don't meet this criteria then it is automatically rejected. Jpg and gif should be all that is necessary.

I don't want 1,000 500K files being uploaded when they really should only be 2-5K in size for the majority. The smaller the better because by allowing this, you increase your bandwidth where before if they were installed somewhere else it did not affect your bandwidth and processor usage.

I know that it does not seem like much, but even a 5k jpg being pulled 100 times a day adds up over the course of a month.

Actually, a file size limit is already part of the hack. But a checker for valid file would be good, if that isn't already part of it as well...

Yes, the hack already has:

The only downside to this otherwise fabulous hack is that it won't work in 5.4.1 thru 5.4.3. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" /> (if it does, it hasn't been made available to the public) <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I have the 5.4.3 version working in Woody's Lounge - I just haven't had time to write it up yet.

Eileen,

There is doubtless a long line of people waiting for this to be made available! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/rofl.gif" alt=" - " /> Any idea when you might have it written up for us mere mortals?

This is how I see it for php: after the image is submitted, it is checked with getimagesize(). This way you can verify if it is indeed a gif/jpg/png and get the height/width of the image -- if one of those conditions fail -> not_right("Invalid image type or size").

Phew, that's a relief. The further enhanced version I'm using now also lets them upload a picture to use in their Sig and ties in with my HTML email hack to optionally send the Admin notification as HTML so I wasn't sure that I'd picked out the right bits to include in the howto.

Any chance of posting the hack for the sig pictures?
And are you able to block them from linking to that pic from other sites?

It originally attempted to explain how to upload a Signature graphic but it didn't work on the standard w3t. Sorry...

Not so good on this one for me Eilieen! The "editbasic.pl" page looks fine and seems to work well as far as it goes. But when I tried to upload an image for a Signature pic, and clicked the "submit" button, I got the proverbial, "Internal Server Error". Is there a way to check what is not working, either in Telnet or something else? <img src="http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/shrug.gif" alt=" - " />

Thanks! That cured that problem.... but now there is another more serious problem with the "Signature pic".... It is being formatted in HTML in the Signature text box, e.g., <font color=red> <img src="http://www.the-highway.com/forumuserpic/Pilgrim_sig.gif" alt=" - " /> </font color=red> when it should be in Markup Code; so the text string is being printed rather than the actual image being displayed. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

Also, and in less need of immediate attention, is when the e-mail notification arrives, this same HTML format is displayed compared to the "Userpic" which shows as a hot link?

Sorry Eileen, but the Signature is still not being converted to Markup Code. It results in HTML <img src=http://www.yourdomain/userpics/username_sig.gif> Also notice that there are no quotes for the URL, which is also true in the e-mail notification, whereas for the Userpic, the quotes are there, making the link clickable so it can be checked. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> Oh well, nice try.... I'm sure you'll get it this next time! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />

Okay, we are making some progress, but still no success! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" /> What is happening now is that in the Edit Preferences, "Signature" text box, the signature image is returned as Markup Code! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> That's good.... but when the Signature is displayed in an actual post, it appears as: <font color=red><img src=http://www.the-highway/forumuserpics/Pilgrim_sig.gif></font color=red>. In fact, even if you manually type in a signature, using Markup Code, which is allowed, it is changed into HTML in the actual message. hmmmmm Sorry this isn't working yet...

Definitely a no go on that! Get an Internal Server Error when commenting out all of that. I did notice however, that what you posted to comment out was different than what I had. So I substituted yours for mine. Now, what I get using that is the "missing image" box. And one more item that is quite interesting, to me at least, i.e., in the "editbasic" in the Signature text box (with all the mods added), the only thing that appears there is the number "<font color=red>1</font color=red>"; no text whatsoever. hmmmm

Summary: I have implemented the lastest updated hack, including changing the items in the w3t.pm file, but not commenting out the items you just suggested, as I got an Internal Server Error.

Don't know where you want to go from here? You must have some heavily hacked files! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

but if what you have is different then it sounds as though you're NOT using 5.4.3...

Well, I took this as a "hint" and went through "editbasic.pl", "changebasic.pl" and "w3t.pm" line for line, comparing them with a fresh copy of each respectively from the 5.4.3 zip and they are identical, except for the hacked lines, of course. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> Don't know what else to tell you??

Eileen,

Thanks for all the effort and time you've spent on this! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> But it just ain't gonna work on my board for some unknown reason. Therefore, I'm just going to stick with the Upload Userpic and abandon the Signature addition at this point. <img src="http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/igiveup.gif" alt=" - " />

You're very wise. It's impossible to try and explain how to do this one on a board that doesn't have all the rest of my tweaks made to it - especially since I have no way of testing it.

I've deleted all the instructions above to save anybody else going through the agony.
