You could replace book.gif with a 1x1 transparent pizel graphic.

Just name it book.gif and upload it to the /images/icons directory. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I actually replaced the book.gif image file with a new image. It's the .gif that appears right next to the date we post messages in this forum. Much nicer than that ugly book.gif that comes w/ threads.
