Perhaps I just don't like pulldowns, I'm not sure. Gerrit has had a long-standing hack (visual icons hack) that I also really like. Instead of a text description of what the post icon is, you get a graphical representation of what it really looks like! So for "chat" for example, it can also look like a "feedback" cartoon-like bubble, and some users have been using that as well as some others.

I personally find that when picking an icon to represent my post, I like to see what it looks like to decide on whether or not it fits the mood of the post. Perhaps a built-in option (in w3tvars.pm) as to which style shows up might be a possibility?
