We are currently using ubb classic. We use a domain name just for the forums. So we have it set so that when the user goes to www.namehere.com they get taken to the Forums (it's a redirect to /cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi) When we upgrade to threads, will we be able to simply upgrade on the same domain name? Also, will we be able to set it so that when a user goes to the main page, they see the Forums rather than the Portal Page page. Silly questions maybe.....

PS When I posted the above initially without entering a subject title, and used my BACK button to go back, the text I had written originally had disappeared so I had to re-write it. (A bug?)

No such thing as a silly question You will be able to use the same domain - obviously the redirect will alter. Although I have not seen the database / admin set-up, I can't see why you an't set all members to the forum - even if that means running a short SQL query. (you might be able to alter it from the admin section - not sure)

The portal can be turned off 9its pretty simple, just an option 'enable portal?'
for your upgrade, youll just install your new forum and run the import script; once everything has been imported you can set your domain to forward to the new location; additionally there are spider redirectors which will redirect your SE links (which will also forward users who access ultimatebb.php and ultimatebb.cgi respectively).

Ahh, when the portal is "off" the link for it does not display, additionally the "index" page is your forum index...

Yes I was hoping that we could have the Portal page thingy, just have it so that the Forums are the "index". The portal is good for people who visit every day and sites that don't have that much "news" they will want to go straight to the forums.

This would be a nice option to add to the display choices for each user. The portal is great for guests, but many members may wish to skip it as you say.

Needs to be a user selectable option, so that when they tap in the forum URL, they will go to that page (similar to forums/my home option in threads 6.x)

Allen makes a point, if members really want to "subvert" the portal page they can just go to the direct link to the forum: /ubbthreads.php/ubb/cfrm

The main thing would be if it's an option for a user, there would also need to be an option for the admin to make it an option for the user, if that makes sense The reason being. Admins may allow you to turn off the side columns, but they still have some content in those columns they'd like you to see, which is why the side columns always display on the portal page. This at least makes it so users will see the columns on their initial visit. So, in those cases, they wouldn't want the users to be able to skip the portal page.
