I'm not sure how things work with Threads because I'm writing this from the UBB.C POV. What really annoys me in Classic is that when I move a topic to another forum (opting to leave a closed copy in its current location) I can't set the closed copy to be automatically deleted after a certain amount of time.

What I end up having to do is dig out this topic a few days later and then erasing it manually. This is a royal pain in the @$$.

In Threads is it possible for the admin/moderator to move a topic (leaving a closed copy behind), but having the copy "self-destruct" a few days later?

What you could do in threads is use the "Default aged threads to be displayed for this forum:" dropdown to automatically not display threads that have been inactive for a certain period of time. This setting is found when you create or edit a forum.

You could also use the "expire threads after x days" setting (in the same location) to get rid of the old threads as well.

Does that help a bit?

In UBB.threads, when you move a thread, no copy is left behind.

I'm working on a hack (not actively at the moment) to leave a "stub" which points to the moved thread.

I suppose a distinctive string could be placed in the stub, such as "<!--moved ########-->", where ######## is the timestamp of when the move took place. Then it should be fairly easy, possibly by changing doexpire.php, to get rid of the stubs.

Dave,

That hack to leave a "pointer" behind would be pretty cool. It would also be cool to PM all people who participated in the topic that it was moved. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Personally, I prefer the "pointer" to the PMs.

Another solution would be to have a dialog with options:

[] Leave pointer (stub) with link to new location

[] Send private message notification:
... () Only to person who made initial post
... () To everyone who posted

There could also a text box for optional text to be added to the stub and the PMs, in case you feel an explanation is warranted for the move.

Rosemary, in my case "expire threads after x days" won't help because I don't delete old threads, but thanks anyway! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Dave_L/JoshPet, it would be great if this hack could be integrated into a future release of Threads (6.2 maybe?) - the admin shuld have the option to leave a stub and/or notify all those who have posted (or just the topic starter). It would also be great if the admin could set the stub to "dissolve" after a preset amount of time. This would ensure that stubs do their job and then disappear.

Another useful option would be to allow the admin to have more control over moderator actions. For instance the admin might not want moderators to be able to move topics without the stub and/or PMs.
