hi there,
my users just figured out that no notification emails concerning the private messages are sent out as well as no emails when starting a new thread and activating the 'i wanna get a notification when someone replies'. i'm using sendmail and when a new user registered a email is sent out without any problem, so... seems like that our sendmail-server works as well as the main_sendmail-routine in the ubb. any ideas concerning that?
regards!

Well, this may sound obvious but I'll throw it out there anyway... <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

In your Control Panel > Primary Settings > Email Settings, are 'Email Functions Activated'?

not just because of being one of the first ubb-customers ever i'd like to get this problem solved and i'm still waiting for an answer. just a hint to fill out a support ticket would be helpful, but - anyways - this is not fair not answering my message cncerning this serious problem. and: yes, the problem occured on a fresh 6.5 without any mods/hacks. and it's still there. still my users do not get ANY email - no notification concerning a new private message, no notification concerning a new reply. i just get an email concerning new registered users. so - the email-server works, the preferences seem to be okay as already mentioned above. :-/

Don't take it personally, dozens of posts never get any sort of reply from Infopop. And even if you do get one, it usually takes quite some time.

In any event, considering this is working on all other boards (as far as I know), the problem must be on your end, so you should look into it on your own server.

Btw, where is this unmodified UBB of yours then? First thing I noticed at technoforum.de is that you're running the hits hack. Heh.

Actually, the reason for lack of reply here is that I've been on my back for the past two weeks due to an injury. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

PM mails not going out to users is somewhat of a known issue on certain Win32 setups... however, the symptom is different. On Win32, there's an actual lockup during sending - the PM goes through, but the browser will time out while waiting for the email to be sent.

There is no known cause or known solution at this time, but it is on the "ugly bugs that really need to be figured out" list. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

2jimbo, i did update the bbs from 6.01 to 6.5 and the problem occured on this fresh bbs. because i've been waiting a couple of days for an answer i started to hack the bbs/modify some things because of getting rid for waiting for support :-/

2charles, ops, best wishes for you. back to the topic: we do NOT have a win-server, we're using freebsd 4.7, so it's as far as i now a unix-machine. .. even the 'i forgot my password'-email does NOT work. the only email which is gonna be sent out is the notification of new users for me. no notification is sent out concerning privatemessages, no not. is been sent out by a new reply inside the bbs, even the password-forgotten-feature does NOT seem to work, BUT: when registrering new to the bbs the password IS sent. pretty strange, isn't it, hu? maybe you'd like to have a quick view at the server?
i guess YOU know where all important email-routines can be found within the scripts and maybe you'll find a little bug which does cause the problem? thanks, in advance,

chris

Mmm... very odd.

Is there any unusual delay in the functions, or do they seem to happen quickly?

Have you tried using SMTP instead of sendmail, with localhost or 127.0.0.1 as the server?

It sounds like sendmail is eating the mail, but it can be very difficult to figure such problems out...

2charles, yeah, i just tried and used smtp using 127.0.0.1 as the server and a quick test with a newsletter did work using the cp 'email 2 members'-feature, the notification concerning a new pm or reply within the bbs did not work :-/ strange, uh?

Very.

Unfortunately, I can only really do work on unhacked boards.

Please make a clean test install somewhere on the server - does it also show the same problem? If so, please open a support ticket using the link in my signature. I'll look at the board and run a few email tests. If you already have a ticket open, reply to it with the new board URL and ask that I run the email test. (The support team doesn't have the new email testing scripts yet, so I'll need to run things. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> )

Unfortunately, this really smells like a server configuration issue. Once the UBB sends out the mail to sendmail or the SMTP server, it's totally out of the code's control...

charles, because new users do get their passwords thru email, because i do get notification-emails concerning new registered members i guess there's no miskonfiguration on the server. it's even the same server we used for ubb6.01 and everything worked like a charme, except some bugs within the bbs *g*

the main thing is: i installed the clean bbs and the bug appeared but due the fact that - as you may now - i do run a VERY huge bbs there was a urgent need for some mods/hacks, otherwise the users note that we do not provide important features: and leave the site. i do know the 'new' policy from infopop but i cannot accept that because i paid for a software which should work.

if i did include a bug by patching/hacking the bbs i would even love to get also support, maybe you can tell me someone who i can trust to and who could have a quick look at the bbs and this problem, i even would like to pay him/her for fixing the bug. i even would pay you/infopop for fixing the bug but due the policy i'm absolutely NOT satisfied with the actual circumstances...

i've been using the ubb for such a long time, i'm one of the firsttime-customers of infopop, so i think we should find a solution for handling this bug?

regards from munich,
chris

p.s. it's not possible for me to install on that server a clean ub, i regret. i run this bbs and cannot install another one, i'm sorry we cannot use that for finding a bug-tracking...

Every function that sends mail does so in the same exact way - they call the ubb_mail or ubb_mail_tng functions, which send the mail out. Nothing at all, anywhere, should ever stop the mail from being delivered. If some mail is getting delivered and some is not, it is often something wrong with the mail server rather than with the UBB.

The mail testing scripts involve overwriting many files, including ubb_lib. I can't do the testing on a hacked board, as the testing would destroy the hacks.

Why can't you install a second copy on the server? It's quite easy - just use a subdirectory of the cgi-bin as the CGI directory and a subdirectory of the existing NonCGI directory as the new NonCGI directory.

i just wonder why just the notificationemails aren't sent out, every newsletter came thru and was sent without any bug, using sendmail as well as smtp: both works fine. for newsletters and newuserregs as well as forgotten passwords.

as stated above, it's not possible for me to install another ubb - it's even not my server. i am not allowed to install a new one and i do not like to, i'm still confused and slightly angry about these circumstances, daily i get new mails from our users cncerning that bug and this gets on my nerves.

charles, you know every line of the code of the ubb, you know the major bugs, you know how even to fix problems which appeared by wrong hacking / patching the bbs. so, beforte testing just backup all the files :-) ? i can even register you an account with admin-features, tell you the access-data for the server and so you can switch off the bbs, browse around, backup the files, run your test-scripts and restart the bbs as soon as you found the bug which shoudn't take a minute for you as THE pro...

i really would like to solve the problem asap because the not-emails ARE an important part for my users to come back and i do not like to loose my users because of an technical problem...

regards,
chris

Chris, if you can't install a new board on the server, can I as a troubleshooting measure? Whoever you're getting your hosting from can't be THAT strict about it, can they?

I flat out can not touch a hacked board that's experiencing a unique problem such as this. This goes beyond the standard Infopop policy on support for hacked boards. (Normally I don't have too much of a problem with hacked boards that are experiencing odd problems, but this one is VERY weird to the point where I don't know where I'd start looking for the problem.)

I have absolutely no guarantees that there's something that might not be even in the code you're running (i.e. it's in the templates or datafiles) that may be causing the mail problems.

You're a bit wrong about me knowing every line of code... there are still a few places in the code that elude or annoy me enough to make me want to stay out. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Nevertheless, there is absolutely no difference between the mass mailer, the password reminder mail code, the registration mail code, etc... it's an all or nothing thing. If one of them works, all of them should work. If one of them doesn't work, none of them should work.

Because your board has been "tainted" with hacks, I can't be 100% sure that there's not something else going on there that may be causing the mail failure.

The ONLY sure-fire method I can use to diagnose and hopefully solve the problem is to work on a clean board.

Without that clean board, I can not help you.

Oh, before we go any further... just to make sure... do another password retrieval, then be 100% sure you've scrolled down to the bottom of the confirmation page. Sometimes there will be another StandardHTML page printed below the confirmation message that may contain an error.

so we'll give it a try, have to talk to our sysadmin because of granting you access to the server...
