I just migrated to 6.05. What was a nice, stable, reasonable amount of CPU under 5.0 now is bringing my servers to their knees! eek Under 5.0, the CPU usage would be somewhere between 0.75 and 1.5 during peak periods. Now, under 6.05, CPU is regularly running between 5.0 and 10.0, and a few minutes ago hit 60.0!!

This is totally insane! Why is UBB hogging all available resources??

What can I do to combat this aside from throwing more iron at the problem?

There are a few things you can do..

1) Set your UBB to create a search index per forum, and not one index for all.

Control Panel => Primary Settings => Search settings => Index File Method:

2) Archive some of the larger forums. (Rename larger forums to [name] archive, and open a new forum to resume the proper discussion in. Also set the posting permissions to No one and it will show as an archive.

4) Change the display settings to show the last 10 days or less.

Control Panel => Primary Settings => General Display settings => Default Topic View (Days)

4) When it goes gold upgrade to 6.1.0 as it address' many issues that are resulting in your high processor usage.

Hope this helps <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Already had index files per forum.
Dropped from 30 days to 10 days.

I'm not wild about moving the entire forum to an archive. That wasn't necessary in the past.

Do you have any details on 6.1? How will it attack CPU usage? When will it be available? (not beta)

Make sure you are using the cache as well... it's a little intense the first day or so as it builds the cache, but is much easier in the long run.

I'm using the cache.
There still must be more tuning options. I can't accept having to buy another server just to handle UBB.

You'll definately want to consider going to 6.1.0 Beta Release 2, which is coming shortly.

If things are still pretty miserable, we may have another solution available pretty quickly.

I sure hope so. I'm getting complaints up the wazoo, and I've had to isolate the server running UBB so it stops bringing down my mail server due to lack of available CPU cycles.

It's bad, guys.

Are you running unix or Windows? I found last night mapping cgi/pl files to the PerlIS.dll file using the latest version of activestate's perl (629) appears to be working quite well. I am running win2k/iis5 . It runs perl more efficiently and eases the server load a little.

Linux. I'm not a real Micro$oft fan.

Mine runs fine and then all of a sudden, out of nowhere the usage just skyrockets, like the script is reading every file... Is there ANYTHING to debug this? Drives me AND my ISP nuts!
Please, hurry with the new one, k?

ifishgrrl, I have asked you to open a support ticket. There is no reason to be either posting here, nor to be attaching your own, completely, totally unrelated issue to someone else's thread.

Actually, Charles, when I read her reply, I thought it was quite related.

Don't be too hard on Jen. She's having difficulty with this software, as I am.

If her customers are screaming as much as mine, I certainly feel sorry for her. I've already lost several users as a result and I've also had to allocate an entire server to be dedicated to a single UBB forum.

This is turning out to be a very expensive "upgrade."

When will 6.1 be out of beta? I'm reluctant to install beta software.

ifishgrrl is suffering from a different cause for the same symptom - it is an unrelated problem, I assure you. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

6.1.0 is due out.. uh, soon. We haven't set a date yet. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Well then...what IS the "...related issue..." because I've got the same problem!

6.0 has crashed my server at least 10 times in the last 20 days due to a runaway ultimatebb.cgi script. I have just opened a trouble ticket on this.

As you've opened a ticket, there's no need for a topic here, nor for you to attach your unrelated issue to Eunos' topic. Thread closed...
