We have a reasonably active UBB Classic V6.5 board hosted on a Unix OS. It has around 3,000 registered users.

We have 17 active forums, one that is much larger than the rest. It contains 37,000+ posts and some 3,200 topics at present.

When posting a new topic, replying to, or deleting a topic/post from our large forum, the response time is extreme.

Reading topics and posts response times are very good.

I am sure pruning the number of topics/posts would improve performance, but are there any other methods or forum tuning options that could provide positive performance results for this forum with out clearing out thousands of posts?

Unfortunately, this is a case where the best solution would be to remove about half of the topics from the forum. This doesn't have to be done through a prune.

The Move Topics tool in the control panel will do the trick just fine. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Create a new forum, make it read only, then move about two thousand of the topics inside. That way they're still readable and searchable, and you get a performance boost in the main forum.

The last page of topics in that forum is from mid March... moving everything from before May into the archive should be enough. You can continue moving topics into that one archive for quite some time.

Ok, we have archived old topics twice now.

We went down from 40,000 posts to 25,000 and still did not see an improvement in posting/reply response times in our big forum.

This morning we whacked it down to only 1,300 topics and around 16,000 posts and the avg time to post a reply or new topic is at least 30 seconds.

Times to read and view data is very good as always. Its just posting/replyng that is killing us.

any more suggestions??? Cache problems maybe???

Please open a UBB.classic problem ticket using the link below. In the ticket body, ask that the ticket be assigned to me and provide the URL to this topic. I'll want to run some tests on your board...

Sorry we are just now responding back on this thread.

Before we read your response back on the 5th, we took action and shut the problem forum down and moved all the topics & posts over to an archive forum.

We then created a brand new forum and moved the topics back into this new one from the archive. All works fine with this new forum and its content now. Response for new posts and replys is great.

We have the old "broken" forum turned off. It indeed has some broken pointers or indexes or maybe a structrual problem somewhere. It still has the extreme response problems even today and it has only a couple of topics. So the problem was not related to the number of topics/posts that it contained.

Let me know if you would like access to the broken forum for testing and we'll set you up.
