Hi, I just installed the new version of Threads and I am in the process of getting ready to import my classic boards. The install script showed that all the permissions were set correctly (when I installed it earlier today). But when I go to the Permissions Check tab in the new control panel, it shows almost all of the permissions checks as Fail. Is this just because I don't have any forums set up yet?, or is something already really screwed up on my system?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

designed behavior; the initial check ensures you can install; the advanced check will check for full functionality (such as editing templates from the CP

Thanks for responding Gizmo. So since most of the checks came up as fail that means I don't have full functionality? Is that something I need to fix and how...? Again, thanks in advance for any advice.

It means that some features won't work, like the stylesheet editor, which needs the correct permissions for the styles to actually be changed from the control panel.

I set all folders to 777 and all files within each folder/directory to 666.

https://www.ubbcentral.com/doc_install.php for the full set of instructions which includes the deal for Windows servers too. I see that the documentation has missed the fact that there are images inside the admin directory. wink

As harold said, there are some features which require the ability to write flat files and create new ones, the install guide should indicate which should be chmodded, but as harold said a good rule of thumb would be 777 directories, 666 files.

You really shouldn't take a shortcut like you do with this instruction; it is perfectly fine to chmod 777 for all directories and chmod 666 for all files before you want to edit templates etc, but after that you really should tighten your permissions to something like 755 for directories and 644 for files!

I suggest you create a small shell script to open and close all files before and after editing them through UBBT.

755 and 644 is great if you're running php in cgi mode. If you're not, and most hosts are not, those permissions will not allow Apache to create new files nor write to existing ones, if Apache is not the file owner. Harold gave the answer that will work in most situations.
