whenever i "Enable Spider-friendly URLs" i keep getting all sorts of errors with php program files not being found (eg, clicking any of the above menu items brings up an "input file not found" error.

i am presuming this is related to "PATH_INFO" environmental variable. so does anyone know: where is this set, and what is it set to?

What version of PHP and apache are you running assuming you are on a Linux box?

I have been running spider friendly URLs since the first version of 7 without errors. It sounds like you have an apache or PHP issue, not a script issue.

My .htaccess has the following:
AcceptPathInfo on

Please note however that I'm running:
PHP Version 4.3.9
Apache/2.0.52 (CentOS)

I believe however that AcceptPathInfo is an Apache 2.0 option (more info here).

I'm not entirely sure of the equivelant to this in apache 1

this is rather depressing ... no-one here knows anything about this spider problem? my site is starting to lose traffic i suspect because of this, so it's not a small issue. at least not to me, anyway ...

I'm not sure if your version of PHP has this option, but if php is running as a cgi, there is a setting in php.ini that can be changed to make sure PATH_INFO returns a value:

cgi.fix_pathinfo =1

Myself I have the following in my htaccess to make this work:
Code
AcceptPathInfo On

I'm not sure if it requires AllowOverride On for your site though (AllowOverride would be in your host block for your domain)
