When a new user registers, among the options is the following: If the user does not make a selection in the "Do you wish to receive these emails?" box, will they be included in any emails that are sent out? If not, can I change this box so that it defaults to "Yes"? I'm afraid many of my members won't take the time to read all the way down to this option, or might overlook it while registering.

I hid that question in Control Panel » Registration Settings » Registration Screen But FWIW, I think it should default to YES as well.

Alternatively you should be able to alter the script to make yes as the default option if that is what you want - on otherwords people opt out.

Can anyone with more programming knowledge than me (this would be a pretty large group) tell me what changes to make to the script to make this the default option?

I'd imagine this would work: In: newuser.inc.php Lines: 819-821 Change this:
<option value="" selected="selected">{$ubbt_lang['SELECT']}</option>
<option value="On">{$ubbt_lang['TEXT_YES']}</option>
<option value="Off">{$ubbt_lang['TEXT_NO']}</option>
To this:
<option value="">{$ubbt_lang['SELECT']}</option>
<option value="On" selected="selected">{$ubbt_lang['TEXT_YES']}</option>
<option value="Off">{$ubbt_lang['TEXT_NO']}</option>
Give that a shot...

You can use the above method for any of the optional questions, if you wish to give them a chance to opt out

BTW - I use a similar method to pre-tick the 'remember me' box at login.

The more you can save the user from doing the better - the less they have to think is good LOL However always give them the chance to deselect and opt out.
I would also say that if you are sending out emails to your list of members, then always include an unsubscribe link - or at the very least tell them at the foot of the email, how they can opt out of future emails. That way you can't be accused of spamming them.

That's good advice, altho I've never sent out mass emails to my users in the 5+ years I've been running UBB. Classic had a limit anyway, so it was no use. But now it's nice, since I can narrow down users to email by certain criteria. Like, to send the 1700 or so members I have who've never ever posted asking why! lol Altho - I did hide the option to deselect the "allow Admins to email" since, 1) I never did anyway, but, 2) If it's something important, I don't wanna hear about it later "why didn't you tell me!"

I would certainly send one once you are live to encourage all your members including the dormant ones to come and try it out.
Be ready for some bounces though LOL

I believe that by default it'll use nothing, which will default to null; the default null value is yes, so by default they shoudl recieve emails...
