I am not sure if it is disabled here - but how does one tell that there are new posts in a sub-forum. There appear to be no new post indicators on the main forum page. Also on this subject will there be full post tracking, so that we can see how many new threads/posts are in a forum?

Thanks.

The parent forum (or sub forum)'s bulb should light up for posts in a child forum

I'd like to know that, too. I don't see it here, so either it is missing or a feature that can be switched off like in 6.x.

Currently for version 7 this isn't an option. It definitely will be possible. Initially however, since this feature can really slow things down, this has been left out so we can focus on just making sure the base install behaves as expected.

We might be able to get this back in for version 7, if not then it will definitely return for 7.1.

Hello Rick,

good to hear that! For me it's fine, if it will be back in the version after 7.

Here's my vote for a safe return of the full post tracking.

In version 6.5 it did not work properly. Hopefully we don't run into that problem again.

Agree. Full post tracking is a popular feature. I'd here alot of crying from my 7k users if it was gone.

10-24-2006: 7.1 Feature: Added in a config option to show the actual total # of new topics/posts on the main forum listing and also the total # of new replies when viewing a list of topics. Added a new CSS property to set the text properties of these totals when they are being displayed.

Great to see this smile

Does this also apply to sub-forums, displayed on the main page?

Right now it queries the total new in all of the subforums and groups them together next to the total # of threads/posts for the main forum. If that makes sense wink

Rick is the king of trying to make sense of something and completely confusing everyone...

Are we unhappy from not understanding or unhappy after understanding the answer?

Sorry two sad faces doesn't explain frown

We are unhappy because this groups together all new posts from all sub-forums, rather than showing say Sub1(4/15), sub2, sub3(1/1), Sub4(7/52) etc. meaning that a user can see at a glance that his favourite sub-forum called sub3 has a new thread that he can view. Whereas another use who prefers sub2 and has no real interest in the other sub-forums knows his forum has had no new posts.

If I am reading correctly (and apologies if I am not) but all a user will know is that one or more of the sub-forums has had new posts and he will have to still visit that sub forum to find out. If he keeps clicking on his favourite sub-forum and finds no new posts he will be frustrated. Of course the parent forum might not have any posts made to it, so clicking on this forum would not benefit the user. He would just want to jump straight to the sub-forum if required.

The programming to do what you're thinking is already there and easy to change. I was thinking of doing this in the first place, but there isn't really room for new topics and new replies, so maybe just showing the total # of new posts in the subforum

Why is there not the room next to the sub-forum names? If it get's to much info (which I doubt it) then if it is made an option for the admin not to display the sub-forum post tracking then (s)he can turn it off.

What I mean is not really room to show the topics and posts seperately, since you'd have to indicate what each number was for.

Say you have 3 subforums. You really don't want it to look like:

Subforum 1: 1 topic, 2 posts Subforum 2: 5 topics, 8 posts.

That would seem to be a bit much. It would probably look a bit better if it was just:

Subforum 1: 3, Subforum 2: 13

Or why not

Subforum 1(1/2) Subforum 2(5/8)

People will figure out what 1/2 means especially if it is in the same colour as the new post count for the main forum.

You do not need to keep repeating the words topic & posts smile
