Would like to change the location of my forum to the root from root/forum/

Is that tricky to do?

Thanks

Stan

move the files, then update the paths in the includes/config.inc.php file.

If you plan to upgrade, you will need to apply the upgrade to the old location before moving; you cannot run both 7.1b4 and 7.0.2 as 7.1 has additional table formatting that has to be applied which shouldn't work with 7.0 nicely.

You should upgrade your current install, then move; or move then upgrade (and delete your old files).

Again, running 2 separate installs with the same database is not recommended, regardless of if they are different versions or not.

Personally, I'd leave it as domain.com/forums/ubbthreads.php -- especially if you already have the forum indexed in search engines. And you never know if you'll add domain.com content down the line. You could add a redirect if you wanted to, though...

Well I'm going to start a new one and I'm going to use

forums.mysite.com

It will keep things separated better on the server I think. But for existing sites there are more things to consider.

I don't like using subdomains for forums, it takes away from your sites search engine ranking :/

I'd rather promote my community as a whole vs alienate part of my site for organization

And? I doubt a search engine really has to worry about their own rankings lol

Not sure why really but I'm sure there is a better reason for doing it than either one of us are talking about.

Searching almost every large site operates in this manner. Not being a Web Master I'm not sure why it's done but there has to be a valid reason why all of them do it and I don't think it has squat to to do with search rankings.

Lol, I'm not saying that it has anything to do with SE rankings, other than the fact that search engines treat subdomains as seperate sites wink

Not sure if this will help,
but when i was playing around with 7.00
i was messing with the paths etc.

And i found that if any uploads attachements
had been uploaded i think i'm right in saying its
embedded in to the post the path.

So if your moving your site and post,
test out to see if

Your attachements fail, or even avatars etc..
I think you will loose the correct path to your
internal links post to post so to speak.

All you need to do to check this is
modifiy the path to the upload folder
which would be in your sub domain.

Personally, keep it where it is if its not causing any problems
you may only create new ones.

p.s.
I have my attachements on a subdomain and works fine
but my forum is in site/forums.

images.mysite.com/blar balr

So if for what ever reason i get hammered by
bandwith robbers for images, my sub domain will
suspend its self and the main site, forums continue
with out any problems smile

Hope that helps,
its been a while since i played so i may not
be entierly correct. (But Close)

Attachments on a subdomain sounds like an interesting idea; I have a .htaccess rule to stop 3rd party sites from linking to files/images; the root .htaccess is inherited to the other directories; so I suppose just having it in the root of a subdomiain would alleviate it for files that i could want users to hotlink to...
