File Manager : is it a wasted feature?

One of the main reasons i feel at the momement that
our upload features isnt been used is because members want
to write comments with an image.

So because of that, members continue to use 3rd party sites.
where as i dont mind hosting there images etc as its
a reason to come back when they accidently delete that
image from there 3rd party.

Basically i'm thinking its almost a wasted feature.
Its an excellent feature to offer and i love it as it easy,
once you change its default name to "Upload Manager" than "File Manager".

The fact remains that members just dont use it because there
stuck at the end of a post and can not be viewed / commented on (Underneath).

Couldnt a script be written where it recognises that its a gif-jpg-png and once uploaded show a url link too it?

So if i was uploading images, then when i say Done adding files,
it shows the urls of those images below.

Then they could be edited into your post before you Submit it,
and then you can preview it too.

I havent used any other upload software, on forums, but
i guess there is always room for improvement. smile

Other issues.
1. If a member posts a image, there is no notification via e-mail. You have to look for key words.
2. I would love to see image re-size too. As the (viewed x times) Attachement when its over a file size to me really needs to be assosiated with a document or simular, not an image where theres somthing to see.
3. Because of the "You Tube" craze i would love to see in the cp the option to put diffrent file types in diffrent directories.
With also due to the attachment type restrict its size. 2mb video but not a 2mb image.
So i could host videos and if i was running out of space in time to come i could just delete the contents of that directory.

Your doing a TOP JOB Rick,
hopfully just putting somthing on the table to think about,
as there is no mention of the above coming anytime soon.

My thoughts and Feedback (At least we have an upload feature)

If I'm not mistaken, inline images (or at least captions, which would be really easy) is already on the drawing board...

I, for one, wouldn't want to host videos AT ALL, tho - first, you'd have people uploading 5-100MB video files which you'd then have to automatically convert to Flash. Why reinvent the wheel when other sites host videos already? Let THOSE sites eat up their disk space and bandwidth - not me! wink

It is my opinion that the filemanager itself needs work; possibly allow users to just upload files for inclusion within your forums, allowing them to be uploaed from a central location (outside of the new post/topic page)

Several of my users are doing just that with our PhotoPost install. I have each image showing the UBB code needed when making a post that shows the image.

I expect to see some changes with the "photo album" features coming to a future version; can't wait to see what rick does...

I'm hoping we have a system that rivals that of the Melto gallery, but with some features from Photopost...

One thing I love about gallery is that they have a "gallery remote" so users can upload photos to their gallery (that they have access to) via a programme on their computer...
