Is there any particular reason this needs to be changed? Is this not working in a particular browser? The only big difference between a div and a span tag is that the div tag includes a paragraph break because it's a logical division in the document. We don't necessarily need divs, since we just need to apply the style or assign an id.

It's a validation thing. Posts like include divs (like in quote tags). Divs are not allowed to be contained in spans, since spans are inline and divs are block level.
The same goes for his other post about this. Tables are block level (well, they aren't but we'll say they are to avoid a long discussion).
Spans are really only meant to contain text and other inline elements
