Never Ever Loose it?

No matter how frustrating it can be, never loose it with Moderators or members publicly?

If you turn on your members / moderators you may as well
close the doors before they close them for you.

Seen that happen a few times now.

(Not me as i'm nice) wink

That's quite tame for a Scouse (Liverpool, UK) accent. It usually has multiple ooooo's in it.

In an "Or ay, yer gonna looooose it" kind of way.

(Translation: "Excuse me kind sir. Please be careful as you may accidentally misplace that item.")

Well, since I'm new at this, I haven't had the pleasure of losing it yet. But being a Southern Bell redneck, no doubt "losing it" will try to surface itself!

Since I'm enlisting degreed teachers and consultant trainers (only 2 so far), I'm hoping their maturity will out-weigh any angry monsters hidden in their closet.

Personally, I get "pushed to the edge" when I visit other forums and read posts where the more-educated folks demean an average mind with their expanded vocabulary. The simple-minded person hasn't the faintest idea they're being belittled. No curse words are used, mind you! They do this just because they can! This type of behavior burns me up in a split second.

What should I do if something like this happens on my forum? I guess my options might be to:

1. Delete their degrading post
2. Send them a PM to re-edit their post
3. Ban them

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

the 1,2,3 you posted is fair enough wink
don't forget people should be allowed an opinion but not
at the expense of others. wink

or number 1 you could edit there post stating the
reason why its been edited warning of number 3.
This way you get the message across to many.

(Respectfully)
Hmmm - think about what you are saying here.

How do you think your users would feel to be described in this fashion?

When I first saw this on my forum - populated by major intellects and regular joes. (n.b. - not from major to regular) - I used to think that I should step in and help.

But then I reconsidered.
Hey, they are grown ups aren't they?
They need to be able to look after themselves.
(ok - with moderation if need be.)

It's human nature, isn't it?

Well, that's always a difficult call.
1) I would prefer to 'moderate' rather than delete.
2) I would PM to 'suggest' calming down their post (with a 'veiled' threat re: playing nice &/or suspending their account)
3) LAST resort.

Users need to feel they can 'gob off' or 'let rip' into a debate without the immediate threat of Banning (unless of course you need to implement a zero tolerance policy).

Obviously - just my thoughts - but I hope something here helps in some small way.

Trixie, I wouldn't do anything until you've published a list of rules. Otherwise you'll be accused of making up the rules as you go. I made a list of rules, and we stick to them faithfully.

The rules should be very specific - not ambiguous. For example,

Badly worded rule: Posts that are not nice will be deleted.

Better worded rule: Posts attempting to demean another person will be deleted.

Thanks. I had forgotten about that editing feature to slap someone's hand. Not sure I'll use it since it seems to be a form of humiliation but having more options is always a good thing.

okay - summarise with the edit option with a link to
your forum rules.

content has been removed as its against our forum rules
at the least they will read the rules again
if you don't want to point out the error of there ways.

But hopefully in your shorthand community you will be ok
and get away with a minor edit and a pm wink

I also tend to agree with driv. I have found that I really need to not "babysit" people.

When I first started my forum (nearly 7 years ago), I wanted to make sure EVERYONE was happy. Trust me - that's just not possible. I figure if most of the people are happy most of the time, then we're doing well.

I actually do not do anything about a person who "speaks down" - unless they are breaking "name-calling" rules, or really being obvious about it. Sometimes people don't even know they're doing it - and certainly don't mean it that way. It's difficult to moderate for "intent". In the end, it's nearly all a judgement call, and that's why I find that clearly defined rules help a lot. smile

Plus, as driv says - they're all grownups, and human. smile

we actually created an 'anger management / vent' forum, where users could post about stuff that was ticking them off.

we had to make the rules clear, that they couldn't go in there to say 'member x sucks bug time!', but they could just go in there and let it rip about something that was pissing them off.

it helped in a coupla ways.

1. the user let off some steam
2. it made for some vERy interesting reading, to say the least!
3. there were some very well done 'Dennis Milleresque' rants, that we ended up saving for posterity.

That would turn out to be the most popular forum ever lol.

A Rival site done a "Bitching" forum,
it was the demise of the site, it all imploded when members
turned on staff then admin, at first it was fun then got
serious. baring in mind it was a Local Site, so most people
knew or had met each other.

So it may work for a non local site as oppose to a national site.

we have a site where the age average is a lot younger than the admins, so when the admins speak, the regulars listen (EF Hutton commercial theme plays in the background).

that's how the site has never lost out to squabbles.

i'll admit there have been some doozies, but in the end MOST of those who leave 'in a huff' come back.

its entirely predictable.

Just a side note to a Internet Warrior we had years ago,
he caused the worst ever disruptions, stirred up trouble
etc, any way the moral of the story was he was 14 years
old and came over as 35year old Fighter :omg:

Its just a note for others that members are not what they seem wink

By the way i'm only 3 years old with a credit card lol

Oh, gee ... we've had some horrors - I'm sure we all have here. It's getting that way now though, that I can pick a problem person from the time they join. Then I just wish they'd hurry up and do something to break the rules so that I can ban them.

Not so far, but I don't do all that much moderation even on my own board. For the most part people don't do much to require it.
