I just installed version 7. I have php4 installed and I have selected gd2 in the UBB control panel.
My problem is when you register, the image sometimes has 6,4 or no Characters displayed. The empty box with the red x.
here is the url to the registration page HERE
My host informed me that gd2 is in fact installed with FreeType support but I have no clue how to test it. I do have the ability to change to PHP5 versus PHP 4 in the server control panel.

You should ask your webhost if ImageMagick6 is installed; it's a far superior graphics library that can be used for the captcha

I've been using PHP5/MySQL5 with UBB.T7 since initial beta without any problems; on two seperate servers...

I have run into some problems with poorly coded scripts, but it was easy enough to fix their issues myself

yah, but those poorly coded scripts aren't in ubbthreads.. right?

i have yet to find a reason NOT to go with v5 on both for ubbt, was my assertion.

Lol no, those are not involved with threads at all, they're other third party webscripts.

Most of the "compatability" problems between PHP4 and PHP5 are security related anyway, doesn't take long at all to patch things to work in php5

WS_FTP can easily be mis-configured and not upload file types correctly at times.

Maybe try another FTP program. There are a lot of them.

FileZilla is one you could try that's free.

Just keeping the problem simple.
As in upgrading php may not be the option just yet.

You could try checking permissions on the images/captcha/backgrounds folder. Make sure the folder itself is readable and also the images within. It doesn't have to be writeable, just needs to have read permissions.

Sorry Been away but I still have issues with this.
I will try to answer some of the replys in some type of order

1. WSFTP- Yes I am aware of issues with the settings.
In this instance I uploaded in manual mode not auto mode. Image folder and sub folders in Binary all other folders and files in ascii. After further investigation I think the real issue with this program is it created a ".log" file on all transfers. After several attempts at turning the log feature off I found that I did not go back and double check the existing folders already uploaded. After I deleted them the image has been working fine just the background image is missing.
2. Is ImageMagick6 installed- No but my host provider is willing to install it if I provide the license and software. Don't know where to point him to?
3.checking permissions- I am on a windows 2003 box all I can say is that my control panel shows all files with the correct permissions. In fact the ubb control panel shows them all correct even though it does not check the captcha folder.

Bottom line is the captcha function appears to be working and stable now.
Should I have a concern that the two background images provided in the install do not appear?

my recommendation would be to see if you can view the images at all in your web browser, if they load fine in the browser it'd likely be a graphics processing issue.

they should be:
http://www.yoursite.com/forum/images/captcha/backgrounds/background1.jpg
http://www.yoursite.com/forum/images/captcha/backgrounds/background1.jpg

ImageMagick6 isn't license wear, it's opensource. They can install it from their webpage (here).

and yes, you should be concerned that the background images aren't loading; likely it's due to a limitation in GD, or at least on your system; hence my recommendation of IM.

Well, if the images load, then they where uploaded properly (as if they wheren't uploaded properly you'd have some nice red X's); so ImageMagick would be a good try to see if it's just GD not playing nice.

As for flavors, I don't do windows hosting, so i haven't the faintest; if it was Linux I'd send you at CentOS5 lol.

Looks like I'm in a similar boat here.

Running Apache2, Php5. I have both GD2 and imagemagick installed. though with the captcha option under registration settings the system will only allow the imagemagic. it does not give the gd2 option as the gallery settings do.

Gallery graphics are working fine, but captcha at registration is showing a red x graphic.

I can load the graphics manually ie http://www blah blah/images/captcha blah just fine.

I'm thinking it's in php? I tried installing webalizer and at the very end it pop'd up with an error "Recompile GD with USE="png"

So anyone got any ideas what I may need to do here?

How would I recompile php ??

I have imagemagic 6.3.5.10 installed.

Seems image magic is not working properly. Photos uploaded to a gallery are turning up X'd

something must be just a tad bit off. GD2 will post graphics fine. But I'm concerned about gd2 as I said an attempted install of webalizer returned an error that gd2 needed to be recompiled with use=png.

Makes me kind of wonder.

What is the path you've entered for ImageMagick? I've noted some not actually including "mogrify" and "convert" in the path (as in they just enter /usr/bin vs /usr/bin/convert and /usr/bin/mogrify; paths will likely vary)

What you can do is go to the following url for your forum while logged in as an admin. If there is an error occuring, sometimes we're able to catch it and output it:

ubbthreads.php?ubb=captcha&t=im&test=1

Rick, I'd like to sugguest that the url you provided be included in the admin cp next to the paths, as a "test path" link?

Your ImageMagick install was not compiled with JPEG support on your serer; it's a server issue that you should have your server tech look at.

Not sure what to tell you; the error says that is the problem (that jpeg support isn't compiled into IM)

Ok, welp. Just so it's here for anyone else that has this problem.
So Far this is where I'm at. Hopefully with a little help someone will spot the last little probelm and point the way to the magic light.

Problem: Jpeg support not compiled into ImageMagic

Gentoo System, Installed ImageMagic via the portage tree with default settings.

Solution (partial) so far

Download libjpeg-6b from http://www.imagemagick.org/download/delegates/

./configure
make
make install

Unmerge via portage ImageMagick.
Copy ImageMagick (latest editon) from the portage/bin directory to a temp directory, bunzip it, untar it.

./configure -with-jpg -with whatever else you want in there, (Read the install-unix-txt file in the Image Magic directory you just untar'd)

make
make install

http://www. Your website/forums/ ubbthreads.php?ubb=captcha&t=im&test=1 to test and I get an even larger error msg than when I started. All of it saying basically it doesn't know how to deal with .ttf files.

PHP error: convert: FreeType library is not available

Downloaded and installed the freetype-2.3.5 delegate tried the whole thing again... Still no freetype. Any Ideas???

Solved:

Ok, Just so it's down somewhere for others that find themselves with this problem

Heres, what I ended up doing to solve the problem.

Problem, Jpg not supported by default install of imagemagick via gentoos' portage system.

Tryed, unmerging imagemagick and manually installing, with mixed results, see above.

Solution.

/etc/make.conf add jpeg to the use flags

emerge imagemagick with the new added use flag of jpeg and the default installation works like a champ.

Its' always something simple that eludes us.

Gentoo linux uses what they call a portage tree, like rpm's and such. Pretty clean system, emerge package and it installs the program with little fuss. adds whatever it needs to make things work the way they should. Well For the most part anyway laugh

In this case I added jpeg to the global USE flag list so that jpeg support would get compiled in with the program when I emerged it into the system.

Problem solved.

Thanks for the help guys....

Just as an aside, whatever happened to the UNIX, MYSQL and PHP forums we used to have on the old w3t board? they really helped people like me that can get in and work on things, but just don't have the 20+ years working with unix like we do with dos and windows.

I don't know when or why it happened, but I am only getting a red X where the image should be.

When I did the test (ubbthreads.php?ubb=captcha&t=im&test=1) suggested by Rick, I received the following error message:

PHP error: sh: /home/maritim5/www/forums/images/captcha/backgrounds/background1.jpg: cannot execute binary file

I am still using the 7.4 final version.

Any thoughts on what is happening on my end?

Are you using GD2 or imagemagick.
Possibly the host upgraded and moved imagemagick to a different path.
Try GD2 and see if it works again.

It looks like maybe your path to convert isn't set, or was blanked out. In the control panel under Db, Paths & Urls -> Paths & Urls you'll see where it wants the path to convert, which should be something like:

/usr/local/bin/convert

I am using GD2 only, therefore, does the following still apply?

/usr/local/bin/convert

I don't think it still applies, as I think the above is for IM and not GD2
